That is a lot of launches, and a lot of satellites.

It's predictable that there'll be lots of failures, I guess. But that's just how optimization via intensive testing works.

And really, one launch per month for a space trucking company is really nothing. I mean, FedEx started with many flights per day, right?

And now that I think of it, is that why Musk picked SpaceX?

FCC approves SpaceX’s revised Starlink satellite plan; first wave gets set for liftoff

The Federal Communications Commission today approved SpaceX’s proposed revisions in its plan to put thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit to provide global broadband connectivity, clearing the way to start launching satellites next month.
SpaceX already had authorization for 4,425 Starlink satellites that would use Ku- and Ka-band radio spectrum to beam internet data, but last November, the company asked the FCC to sign off on a plan that would put more than a third of the satellites in 550-kilometer-high (340-mile-high) orbits rather than the previously approved 1,150-kilometer (715-mile) orbits.

After experiencing two sets of delays last week, SpaceX on Thursday launched 60 Starlink satellites that will be used for its home broadband constellation.
The 60 satellites were launched inside a Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida.

According to SpaceX, the satellites are capable of tracking on-orbit debris to autonomously avoid collisions and 95% of their components will be burnt in Earth's atmosphere at the end of their life cycles.

SpaceX and CEO Elon Musk have been extremely tight-lipped about the Starlink satellites, only dropping a few hints here and there before the launch. We know, for instance, that each satellite weighs about 500 pounds, and are a flat-panel design that maximized the amount that can fit in each payload. The launch media kit also described a “Startracker” navigation system that would allow the satellites to locate themselves and orbital debris with precision.

As helpful as SpaceX's Starlink satellites may be, they could be a pain for astronomers. The Harvard-Smithsonian Center's Jonathan McDowell and others have observed that the internet satellites are bright enough to cause a "problem" for astronomy, and the eventual constellation of roughly 12,000 satellites could complicate humanity's view of the night sky. It would triple the number of satellites in orbit, CNET noted, forcing telescope operators to account for the objects.

Astronomy Group Says Starlink and Other Satellite Constellations Could Threaten Science

The group, most famous for its role in "demoting" Pluto from the rank of planet, represents more than 13,000 astronomers worldwide.
In its statement, released yesterday (June 3), the IAU pointed out that while there are several megaconstellations under development, no one knows quite what consequences such huge numbers of low Earth orbit satellites could have on astronomy.

The statement is careful to note that it isn't just SpaceX's Starlink that poses a threat to astronomy. The company's existing Iridium constellation, as well as the in-progress OneWeb and existing Globalstar internet networks are also cited in the statement, as are Amazon's recently announced Project Kuiper satellite internet and the Athena internet satellite that Facebook was suspected to be working on last summer.

SpaceX's megarocket, the Falcon Heavy, is poised for flight. Perched atop NASA's historic Pad 39A, the behemoth will lift off sometime during a 4-hour window that opens tonight (June 24) at 11:30 p.m. EDT (0330 GMT June 25).

SpaceX is hoping for fair winds and following seas for its planned booster recovery attempt. Last week, company CEO Elon Musk tweeted that this will be the company's most difficult launch attempt so far. That's because of the range of orbits the satellites need to reach.

The U.S. Air Force has already certified Falcon Heavy to fly national security payloads, but this is the vehicle's first launch carrying a government payload, so the Air Force is paying close attention to how the vehicle performs during launch.

The European Space Agency had to move one of its satellites out of the way today to protect it from colliding with a SpaceX Starlink satellite, the space agency just announced on Twitter.

ESA says it’s the first time it has had to perform a “collision avoidance maneuver” to stop one of its satellites from crashing into a “mega constellation” satellite. Specifically, it had to fire the Aeolus satellite’s thrusters in order to increase its altitude so it could pass over a SpaceX Starlink satellite.
Subtle dig: It’s hard not to interpret the news as a criticism of SpaceX’s plans to launch 12,000 satellites to provide broadband internet connections. Other firms, like Telesat, OneWeb and LeoSat, have similar plans. SpaceX started by launching 60 of the satellites in May 2019, but it plans to rapidly ramp up the numbers in the coming months.

A potential solution: There will be too many to keep tabs on. As a result, ESA is preparing to automate this process using artificial intelligence systems, which assess potential collisions and move satellites out of the way.

SpaceX says it plans to change its satellite launch strategy in a way that will speed up deployment of its Starlink broadband service and has set a new goal of providing broadband in the Southern United States late next year.

"This adjustment will accelerate coverage to southern states and US territories, potentially expediting coverage to the southern continental United States by the end of the next hurricane season and reaching other US territories by the following hurricane season," SpaceX told the FCC.
SpaceX said it already planned to "provide continual coverage over northern states after as few as six more launches," but said it needs a license modification to speed up deployment in the Southern US. SpaceX's filing stresses the importance of quickly getting service to parts of the US where broadband coverage is limited.
