I bought an iMac 27 with its retina 5K display. I have been using it for a couple of months, but I got bored with MacOS so I am going back to Linux/windows. But one thing I didnt get bored with was the 5K monitor. In fact I find it hard to leave it. When I use Windows with my 4K monitor I see a huge difference in picture quality. It is so bad that I constantly think about it. Especially in fonts in the OS and programs. 5K is so much more pleasant for the eye. And the brightness, oh the brightness! And yes, I have done everything I can with Cleartype, but it doesnt help. When I look for 5K monitors for regular PC´s I am surprised to find that there are not many to chose from. And are really, really expensive. But since I am gonna sell my iMac I will get the cash to buy a 5K for PC. I wonder if anyone have experience with 5K monitor with windows and/or Linux? Will I get the same experience as in a Mac? Recommendation of a brand maybe.
Looks like it might be a bit tricky, particularly if you plan to use a pre-built PC: https://medium.com/@ambroselittle/running-the-lg-ultrafine-27-5k-display-on-windows-10-e8b58cb9bf43 https://trenchant.org/daily/2017/3/27/
Are you sure resolution is the issue? I mean 4K isn't far away from 5K. Movie industry standardized on 4K resolution and after that they are going to move to 8K directly, because this doesn't make much sense in that small increments. There are other properties of monitors and TVs that are important for quality. Example: some 4K TV are HDR (High Dynamic Range) certified while other 4K TVs don't.
To be honest I am not sure. The monitor, Asus PB287Q with latest Nvidia driver on Nvidia Geforce 1070, I use for windows has not been used for a couple of years, I bought i 4 yers ago if I recall right. Anyway, you are right now that you mention it, there shouldn't really be such big difference as i experience between the two resolutions. There is no monitor driver on the Asus site so it uses the windows default driver. I will search better for calibration suggestions.
