I would really love to know how to do scheduled backups to external drive and how to restore computer from nackup with usb key?Thks

Is Drive Snapshot very reliable in Windows 10?

What restore media do you use?
It wants to make a diskette. I can put that on CD/USB, but there must be a better way.

 

I am giving Drive Snapshot a try. I am doing a backup. By default, it only selects a single partition on my operating system C drive and doesn't select the System Reserved or the Recovery Partition.



If I select them all, then press next, I get some obscure message that I have selected multiple partitions, and I must specify $DISK in the output file name.



If I continue, I get the message that HD1:1 and HD1:3 are not supported by the Volume Shadow Copy Service.



So, how do I image my entire operating system drive, including all partitions to a single image file?

Forget the diskette. It is DOS. Use a WinPE for restoring images. Not DOS as it is clunky and slow. If using a 64-bit WinPE, use snapshot64.exe.

 

You mean just boot into windows recovery or a recovery disc or USB or create something else?

 

You can't. You get a single image for each partition. I assume you put 0 in "Maximum image single file size" to prevent splitting the image.

Multiple images aren't a problem when it comes to restore time. They restore as one. You don't have to individually restore each partition.

 

I don't follow that. You said you can't, but then you said put a 0 to prevent splitting.

 

The splitting refers to the partition images. eg an image could be 20 GB or 1 GB twenty times.

 

DS works fine for MBR or UEFI systems. You can use the GUI or a command line for backups and restores.

I've made a Windows 10 v1903 WinPE Boot Disk (x64) ISO.

 

VSS. That just means they aren't NTFS Windows partitions. They don't need to be locked by VSS. Probably DS is doing the locking. All OK.

What was the $DISK error? If your intended filename was hadron.sna it will be changed to hadron_$DISK.sna. But the actual image files created will be hadron_C.sna, hadron_D.sna, etc.

Edit... I saw the same errors the first time but not with the second backup. The first backup restored OK.

 

So, all those cryptic messages are OK, then?

Just two other things..... I think.
Do you ever check the box, "Test Image After Backup"? What does it do?
Because it will be 3 images from what I have just learnt from you.


Also, where is SuperDuperBackup.BAT to be found?

 

You can even use a Win10 UFD or your Macrium or TBWinRE UFD.

 

"Test Image After Backup" is a Validate. I rarely use it.

No idea but it's likely to be for DOS.

That SuperDuperBackup.BAT batch file is unknown.

I guess I'll just do a standard schedule.

 

OK. It looks like it is in c:/programs/snapshot/SuperDuperBackup.BAT.

But you and I probably don't have DS installed.

A full disk backup (use your drive letters)...
