For women, the % of requirements required is lower
You may have seen stories before about how women in particular don’t apply for jobs unless they’re 100% qualified. We wondered if they were on to something – maybe there’s gender discrimination at play and hiring managers look for women to meet more of the requirements. Turns out, our findings apply just as much to women as to men, and actually, for women, the chances of getting an interview start increasing as soon as you meet 30% of requirements.

New Year’s Honours 2019 lauds women in IT and data specialists

The UK information commissioner, Elizabeth Denham, was awarded a CBE in the 2019 New Year’s Honours list for “protecting information”.

Denham was one of a group of women in the fields of data and IT to be recognised in this year’s list, which was less studded than in recent previous years with awards for civil servants involved in digital transformation programmes in government.

The Entertainment Software Association reported this year that 45 percent of U.S. gamers are female, yet women make up a scant portion of the professional esports player pool. Executives for games like “League of Legends” and “Overwatch” say they are eager to add women to pro rosters, where players can make hundreds of thousands of dollars...

The industry has grappled with harassment and toxic behavior since the Gamergate scandal of 2014, when a group of male gamers organized to target women throughout the industry. Women say they feel marginalized within the community and are routinely subject to nasty comments about their ability or appearance. For elite gamers, much of it comes from fans, but opponents and teammates are sometimes just as challenging. At the lower levels, women are often bombarded by hyper masculinity in a space where most everyone is anonymous..."

GCHQ sets up all-female cyber-training classes

Almost 90% of the cyber-skills workforce worldwide is male, says GCHQ's cyber-defence arm, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC).
With warnings of serious skills shortages, the security services are worried about missing female recruits.
Cyber-girls
The intention is to make cyber-skills lessons more open to teenage girls, in a field which has been accused of having a very male image, whether it is James Bond-style stereotypes or stock photos of teenage boys in hoodies.

The school's computing club could tend to become dominated by the boys, she said, and they had to find ways to make it more accessible to girls.
The lack of women in cyber-security is part of the bigger picture of women in science, technology, engineering and maths, says the NCSC.

A published cybersecurity expert and a high-ranking security official at a popular information security conference are at odds over a Facebook group that has served as a platform for harassment and misogynistic comments toward women in the profession.

Last month, the founders of DerbyCon — an annual hacker conference held in Louisville, Kentucky — announced that 2019 would be the last year for the event. In a blog post announcing the cancellation, the conference’s founders didn’t point to a single incident that led them to their decision. However, one passage stirred up controversy: “There is a small, yet vocal group of people creating negativity, polarization, and disruption, with the primary intent of self-promotion to advance a career, for personal gain, or for more social media followers.”

Women’s networking company Elpha launches out of Y Combinator

Leap, the women’s networking group that was developed by Y Combinator, is spinning out of the company with a new name — Elpha.
Co-founded by Cadran Cowansage, Abadesi Osunsade and Kuan Luo, Elpha is designed as a professional network for women offering content and access to a directory to make it easier for women in the technology industry to connect. In a blog post, Cowansage also indicated that the company will provide access to information about companies that prioritize welcoming women.

A lack of diversity in the technology industry “put off” a number of female IT professionals at the start of their careers, according to research.

The study, by Kaspersky Lab, found that 34% of female IT professionals in Europe were uncomfortable about the gender imbalance in the industry at first – and 29% of men in the sector said the same.
“There is continued under-representation of women in IT across Europe. While there is no overnight fix to balancing the gender divide in our industry, our research and debate help us to understand how we can attract more interest in tech and cyber security and make it more attractive and accessible to women.”

India Lucas, policy manager for skills, talent and diversity at TechUK, said: “We need to challenge current perceptions of what a career in tech is. It’s not one single thing. Organisations need to challenge recruiters to find them female candidates, and we need education to challenge unconscious bias.”

Young women in West Virginia will join more than 6,000 high school girls for the second year of Girls Go CyberStart, an interactive series of digital challenges that teachers girls about cybersecurity.

“Cybersecurity is a growing and well-paying field,” Justice told MyBuckhannon. “The profession faces a shortage of qualified professionals, especially women. The Girls Go CyberStart program is a fun way our West Virginia students can get training opportunities and find out how they can be part of this workforce.”

Throughout the series, students will learn about cryptography, web vulnerabilities, Python, Linux and forensics, according to the Girls Go CyberStart website.
Currently 26 US states are listed as having officially partnered with SANS Institute as part of the Go Girls CyberStart program.

IBM appointed Admiral Michelle J. Howard, the first African American woman to command a U.S. Navy ship, to its board, the company announced Tuesday.
A former U.S. Navy officer, Howard was the first woman to become a 4-star admiral in addition to becoming the first African-American woman to command a U.S. Navy ship, according to IBM's announcement.
Howard's appointment will be effective March 1.

The Tech She Can Charter, aimed at increasing the number of women in tech roles, has reached its second year after having grown to more than 90 signatory organisations.

The initiative led by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) was launched in 2018 to address the reasons why women do not choose technology roles, and now has signatories such as the RAF, Channel 4, Natwest and Tesco committed to increasing the number of women in tech.
Tech She Can has now launched a pilot in schools to try to tackle women dropping out of the tech pipeline in its earlier stages.
Before the pilot, 30% of the female students said they would be interested in a tech career, versus 56% after the six weeks of Tech We Can lessons.

Apple to Empower Over 90,000 US Girls in Coding

In a bid to empower women coders and creators, Apple has partnered with “Girls Who Code”, a US-based non-profit organisation, to create coding avenues for girls in the US.

“Using the ‘Everyone Can Code’ curriculum, 90,000 girls and ‘Girls Who Code’ club facilitators in all 50 states can learn to use Apple’s easy to learn programming language, Swift, (with which) hundreds of thousands of apps are built,” the iPhone-maker announced in a blog-post on Thursday.
“Women have earned the opportunity to have our ideas shape the future. We’re excited to support ‘Girls Who Code’ as they empower girls to be the developers and tech innovators of tomorrow,” said Lisa Jackson, Vice President of Environment, Policy and Social Initiatives, Apple.
