Just updated a tablet from Win 8 to Win 10 and noticed the disk display - so many partitions.
Can someone provide a bit of info on these partitions?
There are two screenshots for Win 8 and Win 10.

Using Macrium image partitions to restore... except for Diags and Part 8 all are needed. Partition 7 is shown in red as it is almost full. I am used to Win 7 without so many "distractions" Is there anything I should do especially with respect to the partition that is almost full?

    beethoven,

A GPT disk. The final two partitions could be factory images. Can you get a DIR on these partitions with Linux or TBOSDT? You might be able to give these partitions a temporary drive letter to let you see the files. If these partitions are not relevant to the OS they could be deleted. You have Macrium for restores so do you need factory images?

The MSR doesn't appear in Disk Management. There are 8 partitions. The MSR does appear in Diskpart and Macrium.

In Disk Management, 100% Free is meaningless.

Brian, thank you - the tablet is a Dell XPS9Q23 and yes, I put Macrium on it immediately and took an image prior to the update and subsequently. I don't mind not having to touch these additional partions but I am just concerned about the red alert on No 7 as almost full given that Macrium indicated that this should be imaged for a successful restoration. I think TBOSDT is from Terabyte and while I have licenses for IfW and Bootit, I am not familiar with it nor could I run it from my Bootit disk given that the tablet has no disk tray.

Can you give the 98% full partition a drive letter? That will let you see what is in the partition. As the disk is probably a SSD I wouldn't be concerned about that percentage.

not sure how to do that ? I googled and it suggested to use disk management, right click the volume to change and then choose a lettter. However when I do so, upon rightclick for this partition I am only offered the option to delete the volume, everything else is greyed out.

Correct technique but no drive letter offered.

Do you have a computer (any computer) with IFW, TBIView and TBOSDT Pro installed? If so, make a TBWinRE USB flash drive. We can use TBOSDT from that UFD to access those partitions.

To make TBWinRE, open IFW, Settings, in Create Boot Media (bottom right) click Windows. Put a dot in TBWinRE. Settings, you only have to use the BootIt tab. Fill in your Name and Product key for BootIt Bare Metal.

On the Project Type window again, Next, IFW license, etc.
Create a UFD using default settings.

If you have a Linux boot UFD it could be used instead of TBWinR

Edit.... I forgot. The TBWinRE should be made in the computer in which it will be used. This doesn't apply to TBOSDT UEFI below.

    beethoven,

If you don't have a TBWinRE UFD the following will be faster...

    Go to...

C:\Program Files (x86)\TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite\TeraByte OSD Tool Suite Pro\uefi

    double click makedisk.exe
put a tick in the 3 boxes
Use your BIBM Licensed Name and Product key
use the defaults to make the UFD

    Disconnect your external HD.
Boot the UFD in your Dell. Use the UEFI flash drive choice in the Boot Menu. It should boot to...

    @C:\>

If asked for Name and Key just press Enter.

type these lines (press Enter after each line)

    Code:
    list hd 1 /f /u /w
Are the IDs of the partitions 7 and 8, 0x07 and 0x08? You can go on partition size to identify them.

    Code:
    open fs 0: 1 0x07
    Code:
    0:
    Code:
    dir
    OK. What is in there?

Brian, created the UFD according to your excellent guidelines in the last post and booted the tablet. @C:\> appeared and no name or key was required. I then entered the first line twice very carefully but got a response that Drive is not partitioned. I tried to enter the line with the spaces as I read them.

    0:
    dir

(your HD was 0 and mine was 1)

Excellent again. A Dell Recovery partition. You don't need it.

Your 450 MiB partition only contains 10 MiB of data so is non functional as a RE. The Hibernation partition is something I wouldn't use.

The only partitions you need to backup are 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.

I'd delete the rest but that's up to you.

Off topic. When you get around to buying BootIt for UEFI you will get a 50 to 100% discount.

Thank you Brian, just to clarify when you refer to backup 1-5, this is based on the last screenshot - meaning the MS recovery partition is not needed?
I will have a look at the upgrade deal from Terabyte - while I have used Ifw on one pc before, I am more used to Macrium, easier for to use or more intuitive to me. I used Bootit with your help before but really only for very specific cases, most of the item I would be afraid to do more harm.
Having installed this morning IFW on my prime pc just to get to the make disk feature, I am running a backup right now. It seems very slow - so far 1h 42 min and still 45 minutes to go. Maybe related to the drive I hooked up? Interestingly enough, I did not really see the usual options re enhanced speed A as I use on the other PC at a different location. It just asked me what to backup and which drive to use for storage - no other options.

    No, not needed.

You are in Simple Operations Mode. In IFW Settings, remove the tick from Simple Operations. You could currently be backing up data partitions that don't need backing up.

This is a BootIt upgrade, not IFW.

thank you - just finished the initial image and was able to check what I had done - yes, quite right I used simple mode and not normal mode. As for the Bootit upgrade, I originally bought the combo of IFW that included Bootit. I am not sure how much I will need just the Bootitupgrade or if the
new "full bundle" with updated IFW is better value?

You don't need a Full Bundle as you already have the latest IFW version. Version 3.

BIBM only boots on MBR Legacy computers. Your XPS boots in UEFI mode and if you ever need BootIt you will need BootIt UEFI (BIU). A new product called BootIt Collection. It is BIU plus BIBM. You don't need another BIBM but you get it anyway.

it comes with the option to order Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite V3 Upgrade at AU $ 33.04 and/or Bootit Collection Upgrade at AU $ 33.91 - the special bundle offer for a fresh purchase is US 49.98 assuming I read this correctly

The Bundle is AU $77.32. More expensive than individually.

Maybe think about it until you are ready and have a use.

Sorry, one more question - I now did a second backup using normal mode and in fact it was faster. Looking at the image files I see they (simple mode/ normal mode) are about the same size but have different suffixes. One is listed as Backup-w0-0x1-Date-1251.TBI and this looks like the normal format I am used on one other pc, so I guess this is normal mode. The other backup is coming up as Date_095412_Full.tbi plus same file ending in ...Full.#0. Now would the restore have different outcomes using these?

    beethoven,

The .TBI is the backup image. Depending on your Options when you create the backup you can get extra files with weird file extensions.

    .#_#
    .#0
    .@0

They are explained in the User Guide but don't worry about them. The only one of importance as far as a restore is concerned is .TBI. Even if you deleted the hash files the restore would still be perfect.
