It was good to see a number of "heavyweights" express their disapproval with this ludicrous proposal. probably a slim chance, but hopefully they can influence Chrome devs to reconsider.

Especially when it's pieced together with that Mozilla blog post indicating they also are moving to Manifest v3, adopting the standard of the market leader = 'best interest of all users'.

    Taking a 2nd look at Pi-Hole.

Looks like Firefox will be adopting Manifest v3 as well. So all the main browsers will have this including Edge as it moves to Chromium-based. It’s like jumping into a DeLorean and travelling at 88mph back in time. We will be left with the Hosts file, Adguard for Desktop, BlackFog and the like. So unfortunate and disappointing.

I can still remember using Proxomitron. Maybe I'll have to go back to it even though it hasn't been updated in years.

You'll still be able to block with programs like hostman and such right?

How exactly does Pi-Hole work? Does it effetively become your DNS server? Have always heard good things about it but never looked into it. Maybe it's time. Do you install it on a secondary machine on your LAN?

Wow a blast from the past. Have not used or even thought about this product in many years.

You can run pi-hole on the pc itself I believe at least with Linux, windows may require a VM, they also sell a pihole rasberry on their website for $90 all set and ready to go that you plug into your router (as long as the router can accept certain directions). Yes it works through DNS, I believe, but I'm no expert I've just investigated a bit. There is almost nothing on Wilder about it. There is a pihole in house forum and an active sub reddit. Users are very enthusiastic - that much I know.

I can vividly remember frustration with hostfiles and trying privoxy type programs before httpswitchboard/umatrix then ublock came along. Those were game changers imo.

Maybe the Mozilla thing won't happen. I do believe they are more interested in what their users think than Google is. Push back to Mozilla will have an effect. Where do we push back?

Windows HOSTS is a basic filter, but at least not granular enough, no files, no content based filtering.

Will have to check it out and look on Reddit as well. I never really looked into it but as I said now may be a good time. My PC has issues running a VM due to the older hardware so I would likely go for a secondary device. Let me know what you decide to do.

They quoted what the Google person said.
That doesn't mean they may decide to do something who knows what some day.

Hopefully that's the case because Chrome will be sending tens of millions of users to Firefox.

I'm having nightmares just thinking about pre umatrix/ublock.

Is Asa Dotzler a programmer who would be involved with things like Manifest V3?

Well, I know that he has been a long-time leading Mozilla employee. His website says:

This does sound like a big problem, but perhaps this is indeed good news for Mozilla.

What do you guys think about Google's explanation, that this must be done to improve extension security? BTW, Ghostery now offers a payed version, I don't really trust these guys, but I still used it for years. :p

Security is the laziest excuse used by every company ever.
Everything is done in the name of security and safety, and the average joes accept it.
