It looks like no Android phone over two years old will be receiving an official update to Pie. Some other more popular devices, may get custom firmware releases. But custom firmware can be buggy. None of my Android phones or tablets - with the newest being three years old, have received an official update beyond Android 5.1 Lollipop

If you want the latest Android update - pixels, nokia and oneplus are the only option. Samsung flagships will get the update but they are usually 6+ months late with their skin on top.

Would be very good if LG G6 gets this update.

My phone currently has v8 aka Oreo. Are there features in Pie that are likely to improve performance/functionality?

For Sony Xperia XA2 series it is expected in January/february 2019.

XA1 won't get it, it seems.

I have to say that Android really is a horrible OS. I haven't been able to figure out how to close apps individually on the Samsung Galaxy S9.

I was wondering that too and only just figured it out. Touch the bottom left button to open the running apps thumbnails, swipe left or right to display an app that you want to close, and then swipe the app thumbnail up toward the top of the screen.

Just show all programs running and push the one you want to close up the screen
