Do you notice if 5 votes are positive rating and one negative it still shows a 5. Their ratings are a joke. Kind of like Facebook, you have to like it or leave. In this offending world.
Definitely. I don't have a lot of time for MG. A few years ago I commented on a post on their site, which said that they had just removed some listings, as they focus on only having the best software. I simply pointed out that they still had a lot of garbage software on their site, which was true then and still is. The owner of the site left a single word abusive reply and then blocked me from posting on Discus on MG. This seemed rather excessive for posting constructive criticism. Since then, I've never liked Major Geeks.
I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder as, I love MGs! It is clean with no ads on my system, an easy discernible/functional layout and the choice between downloading from author's sites or one of MG's servers. It also offers a "huge menu" daily and the option to go back to previous days. What site is better?
my question was more or less a rhetorical one. I agree with you, but a lot of lesser computer experienced people might just download from MJ or similar without giving it a second thought. Edit this is a few years ago, but gizmo's rates MJ #1 -https://www.techsupportalert.com/content/best-freeware-download-sites.htm I suppose they've gone downhill since then...
When i was an instalholic, I used to use those kind of sites like MG, betanews/file forum, etc... looking for new stuff. Now I'm the opposit favoring light static system locked to the core, and using mostly portable apps on another partition. So those sites became irrelevant to me.
Ole MajorGeeks is been holding their own since what? Windows 98 I think. They for this camp was the go-to for many types of different apps and such as well as the occasional experiment grab bag just to see if you could discover or rescue a relative unknown to add to the basic user's collection. It's rare these days when I search out a program from them but aside from that, they always been reasonably dependable. Or at least is been my own experience.
I still consider MG as a reliable download source. Never had any issue with them and I even recommend MG to SUMo users when looking for updates with the "free" version.
I regularly use both SUMo and MG to find out what's new. However, I always get my updates from the developer's website or, if available, via an internal updater.
To answer a few questions starting with yours. Our ratings are 1-5, no in between like 4.9. So, it's possible that one bad rating won't swing it, but I can assure you there's plenty of under 5-star ratings. Go to any category, click Rating, and you'll see a lot of 5-star ratings. We're proud of that. Now, scroll down, and as you do, you'll see 4, 3, 2 and even a few 1-star ratings. It works, just not how you'd think. Check it out for yourself - https://www.majorgeeks.com/mg/sortpopularity/graphic_suites.html To be honest, I wouldn't know how to fake the ratings. Website design - We'd rather focus on content, and it's more of an inside joke at not only how ugly, but how bad the HTML code is. Deleting comments - Maybe I was drunk or angry that day, sorry. That said, I do delete a very small number of FALSE comments. You should see my email. If I make a point to someone, often with links, pics or other physical proof and they want to argue further, I'm not interested. A great example, ironically, is the start of this thread. I'd reply once and if they continued arguing with the proof I provided, I'd delete and ban them. We're here to help people, not have arguments. There's plenty of trolls out there (not you Circuit), and I personally won't be bothered. Why not go to the source? Because you might not know about some pretty cool apps if we didn't spend 7 days a week looking for them, scouring every corner of the internet. Also, we have a YouTube channel and How to sections and more beyond files. YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/user/majorgeeks How to's - https://www.majorgeeks.com/content/overview/how_to.html
After all these years MG is still one of if not the best sw sites... largely because they havent stooped to sneaky tactics like download.com and many others. Basically I agree with everything ratchet said in his post... thanks MG for keeping your integrity! One reason Ill sometimes go to them or Softpedia is to bypass signing in to download sw which is required by some developers on their sites, or just to explore whats out there.
I went back to betanews after majorgeeks started cluttering all the new software lists with a bunch of cheapass dos-like games that have nothing to do with a software site.
I think MG is great as is, I use it more as a news feed for whats been released and what new is out, but I'll always use their links that take me to the devs official page and get the download from there.
Right On brother! Content is been there way longer than tons of others who either strayed into adware laced crap or dropped out. Major Geeks is been consistent. And I can reach back to my very first find on Windows 98 and subsequent years of downloads that set the ball rolling on satisfaction from this end as well as all my geek & technical learned friends alike who know the source of adequate programs and reliability. The very fact that the layout is the same now as then is welcome if you ask us heavy devoted PC users. By the way, thanks @Majorgeeks for all the excessive time and efforts that fashioned and formed such a staple of reachable resources and finds that make the grade. Some awesome long term staying power there
LOL, those are indie developers and games are posted on the weekends only, discounting updates. Games have nothing to do with a software site? Sorry, we've always tried to draw attention to the small developers and we're not willing to change that. I remember when Marcin from Malwarebytes was a college student.....
And it cost us millions. Friggin millions!!! We decided not to use installers as everyone else was back in the day. We debated and decided to stand our ground, but people don't see that and quite a few people made a lot of money. Sometimes makes you wonder, right? Thanks for the support.
