The Rhode Island Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to a Michigan-based startup to operate a self-driving shuttle program for one year starting next spring.

In a press release published by the department on Monday, it said that the company, called May Mobility, will be allowed to test six-passenger autonomous shuttles to help service routes between the Providence neighborhood of Olneyville and the city’s downtown area.
The contract is part of the Rhode Island Transportation Innovation Partnership Mobility Challenge, an initiative launched to explore the newest technologies in transportation.

In a blog post published today on Medium, researchers Mayank Bansal and Abhijit Ogale detailed an approach to AI driver training that taps labeled data — that is to say, Waymo’s millions of annotated miles from expert driving demonstrations — in a supervised manner.

“Following the success of neural networks for perception, we naturally asked ourselves the question: … can we train a skilled driver using a purely supervised deep learning approach?”
The model was fed examples from “the equivalent of about 60 days of expert driving data,” using techniques that ensured it didn’t extrapolate from past motion and actually reacted to changes in the environment.

The problem, the researchers point out, is that driving demos obtained from real-world driving are biased — they contain only examples of driving in good situations.
“Fully autonomous driving systems need to be able to handle the long tail of situations that occur in the real world,” the researchers wrote.

Less than a week before a Uber self-driving SUV prototype struck and killed a pedestrian in Tempe, Arizona last March, a manager sent executives an email cautioning that its autonomous vehicle unit needed to “work on establishing a culture rooted in safety,” reports The Information.

It details several safety incidents that had occurred in the months before the fatal collision in Arizona, including one in which a prototype swerved off the road and drove on the sidewalk for several meters. Miller described delays in reviewing incident logs and wrote “This is not how we should be operating.”

The Information report says that Miller’s assertions were supported by interviews with five current and 15 former Uber employees. While Meyhofer and the other executives who were sent the email did not respond to it, Miller was told by his supervisor that the team would discuss it.

Anthony Levandowski, the controversial engineer at the heart of a lawsuit between Uber and Waymo, claims to have built an automated car that drove from San Francisco to New York without any human intervention.

The car, a modified Toyota Prius, used only video cameras, computers and basic digital maps to make the cross-country trip.
Levandowski told the Guardian that, although he was sitting in the driver’s seat the entire time, he did not touch the steering wheels or pedals, aside from planned stops to rest and refuel. “If there was nobody in the car, it would have worked,” he said.

If true, this would be the longest recorded road journey of an autonomous vehicle without a human having to take control. Elon Musk has repeatedly promised, and repeatedly delayed, one of his Tesla cars making a similar journey.

Kia is working with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab’s Affective Computing group to develop a system called READ, short for Real-time Emotion Adaptive Driving. Kia calls the system a world first, claiming it can analyze a person’s emotional state through “bio-signal recognition technology” and artificial intelligence. The system can then alter certain aspects of the cabin to lift the occupant’s mood, according to Kia.
