You are hear-say to me. So I wondered if you know any facts. Like statements from Microsoft.

But there are people who dislike the cloud even when the data send is minimal. They will probably disable all cloud features in a security product, thus severely weaken its protection capabilities.

Thanks. I didn't think of that.
Unless things have changed, Bitdefender updates every hour. I think that's more than the other AVs do. WD may check every hour, but it doesn't get what it's asking for. Those delta updates are not every hour, they are a few times a day.

It usually only updated once a day on my machines when I was using it, unless the machine was restarted, in that case it would update after a restart.

The first and only WD sig. update on Win 10 occurs as a result of Win Update checking performed on first cold boot. Subsequent system restarts after that point did not result in any WD sig. auto updates on my Win 10 build.

I'm on Windows 10 Home and, according to the Reliability Monitor mentioned earlier, I've had 7 Definition Updates for Windows Defender today in between the computer being in Sleep Mode.

I notice the definitions update changelog for today is showing updates almost every hour so if you have the system set to check hourly, you should get them but if it's set to default, the signatures may not be pushed as frequently unless you manually check for updates.

I can set Update frequency to as often as every hour in Group Policy. How many updates/day are available on average, of course, is another matter, and one I don't have an answer for.

Usually three times a day, sometimes more, or less

I took a look. There are "updates" about every hour, but most of them have no new signatures. So it's an empty update, most of the time.

I adjusted mine via powershell. If you use the get-mppreference command you will get a list of the settings you can change for WD. One of them is called -SignatureUpdateInterval

    From Microsoft:
    -SignatureUpdateInterval
Specifies the interval, in hours, at which to check for definition updates. The acceptable values for this parameter are: integers from 1 through 24. If you do not specify a value for this parameter, Windows Defender checks at the default interval. You can use this parameter instead of the SignatureScheduleDay parameter and SignatureScheduleTime parameter.

If you want change the interval all you have to do is use the following powershell command: "Set-mppreference -SignatureUpdateInterval 1" (for every 1hour, or change the value to whatever you want)

I don't mean specifically github, I just mean little, niche softwares, like Excubits, for instance. Or Brave beta browser. Or ReHIPS. Kaspersky is okay with ReHIPS now, but around a year ago, it totally hated ReHIPS, it just wouldn't stop attacking.

    speed is fine? Seriously?

    2018-11-16_000732.jpg

Even on my super fast laptop, when I have WD enabled, I can literally feel everything crawling even loading my Software folder which contains a lot of custom icons for each folder within, the icons load one by one in slow motion because Windows Defender likes to scan every file again and again with no whitelisting technology and a super heavy scanner

Here are my laptop specs before you ask:

    MSI GT75 Titan 8RG-094 | i9-8950HK @ 4.8 GHz | Samsung M471A2K43CB1-CTD 2400 MHz 64GB DDR4 RAM | GeForce GTX 1080 | Dynaudio System with Nahimic 3 Sound Technology| Intel Wireless-AC 9260 | Chi Mei N173HHE-G32 17.3" FHD 120 Hz/3ms Screen (G-SYNC) | 3x 2TB Samsung 960 PRO [RAID 0] + 4TB 850 EVO + Sandisk 512GB Extreme PRO SD Card | Windows 10 Pro

Seriously. I've been comparing Win Defender and Avira Pro speeds for the last two years on MY COMPUTERS, and speed has improved to the point that it is difficult to tell which is which, to each his own of course...

Your experience is like mine. You point out one of the many issues with these tests: it doesn't say anything about how a software is going to act on any given PC. What a lot of WD complainers don't tell you is how many 3rd party applications they run on their machines. More apps, more potential problems. I keep only apps I need & use, make the most of Windows built-in apps, ditch any junk apps and my machine is as fast as the hardware allows. :thumb:

I couldn't agree more, furthermore trial periods of 30 days will tell you whether there is a substantial impact on your machine. Avira has always been very fast compared to Win Defender on my machines, but as of lately I can't tell the difference...
