I'm wanting to tie a VPN to my Firefox-based browsers, but use an HTTP (or Socks) proxy for my Chrome/Chromium-based browsers. Can this be done, and if so, what are the basic steps involved? Also, someone on another forum suggested I get a second Mikrotik router, and use it as a dedicated HTTP or Socks proxy....will I still be able to use a VPN with that sort of setup? Thanks.

You mean running VPN client on your OS covering all your connection and add a proxy to Chromium? Or Split VPN tunnel to Firefox only and no VPN on Chromium but proxy?
If the former, just using "--proxy-server=example.com:1080" or "--proxy-pac-url=(path of your pac file)" switch will be enough, I think.
If the latter, some VPN providers have addon to allow browser-only VPN but IDK how it works. Maybe other experts will help.

Also I don't see for what purpose you need the proxy, last part of your comment seems to suggest it's not about geo blocking nor IP spoofing?

Okay so I'm using XP Pro, which means all chrome/chromium-based browsers are tied to the outdated CA nazis embedded security certificates store, which means I'm blockaded from about half of all URLs I want to reach, by about 4 or 5 different certificate errors (most of which cannot be bypassed in Iron or Slimjet). I've heard that there are SSL or HTTPS stripping proxies that can circumvent this, so I'm looking into this to restore functionality to SRWare Iron & Slimjet). I don't need this for my Firefox-based browsers, as I have 'Skip Cert Error', so I'd like to have those browsers (especially the TOR Browser) tied to a VPN. I had originally intended to have the VPN tied to the router, covering all connections, but was told this would screw up the use of an SSL/HTTPS stripping proxy....so I guess the only option is to "Split VPN tunnel to Firefox only and no VPN on Chromium but proxy". If it comes to an either/or choice, I need the proxy a lot more than the VPN, but would like both.

I'm not familiar w/ VPN splitting so I hope other VPN experts chime in. But I don't see why VPN on router screw up the proxy if you mean sth like Fiddler. Maybe you can try first, I think it works.
