I have been using Emsisoft for a few years. Subscription is up soon. I am thinking of trying Windows Defender but I have noticed a few posts and comments on this forum and other related ones, about high disk usage from Windows Defender. I have an SSD and would rather not use something that causes abnormal disk usage. I did a search for Windows Defender and high disk usage but found nothing concrete other than a few similar posts.

Just now to test, I turned on Windows Defender scanning ability, while still running Emsisoft as main AV, and at first, the disk usage went up to 15% or so, then came back down after a minute or two.

So is Windows Defender a confirmed a high disk usage program?

While I can't offer any insight regarding Windows Defender's disk usage, it's important to note that it would have to be extremely high amount of disk usage, to have any significant effect on the life of the SSD.

The scan does not affect SSD life at all.
    Those are reads, not writes.

So it is only a performance issue, which for SSD would not be an issue, not a "wear" issue?

    Yes.
As for SSD wear, this only happens on writes, but there was a recent discussion (still ongoing on different subject now) and I can only hope to match Bill's eloquence.

I tried WD for a few days after uninstalling emsisoft and it worked fine . It is maybe 5-10% slower than emsisoft which causes no slowdowns , but there was no high disk usage or cpu usage or any other issue

Thanks. It seems to be a really good program now.

People often seem to worry about SSD lifespans much more than necessary. I have had far more HDDs die on me, than SSDs.
