France demands that a new digital tax on tech giants should come this year

The French government has pushed for a new levy on internet giants, such as Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon, in order to make these firms pay what they see as a fairer tax rate in the region.
This measure is likely to get some sympathy among voters ahead of next spring's European elections.
However, some technical differences among European countries have not allowed substantial progress on this front.
Critics of the new tax say that it could stifle innovation.

The EU has all but abandoned its original plan for a 3 percent tax on the revenues of large overseas digital companies, in the face of opposition from Nordic countries and Ireland.

At a meeting of EU finance ministers in Brussels on Tuesday, governments including Sweden, Denmark and Ireland said they opposed the proposed EU-wide tax because it could harm their competitiveness.

France’s Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire held a press conference earlier today to announce that France will tax big tech companies starting on January 1st, 2019.

So the French government is trying something new. Le Maire thinks it’s better to start taxing tech companies in France now and find European support later.
Le Maire wants to target big tech companies in particular — think Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon. He thinks the new tax could represent around €500 million for 2019 alone ($565 million).

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz has announced that it will introduce its own tax on Apple, Facebook, Google and other companies allegedly dodging their fair share. Most details aren't available at this stage, but you'll get a basic outline in early January. It would take effect as part of broader tax reforms in 2020.

This is "in addition to a EU-wide move," according to Kurz. France is pushing its own approach starting January 1st.

Internet giants such as Amazon.com Inc., Asos Plc and Boohoo Group Plc should pay higher U.K. taxes to help save ailing shopping districts that are losing revenue to e-commerce, according to a government report.

An online sales tax, higher value-added tax and “green taxes’’ on shipping and packaging should all be considered to help soften the blow to physical stores as consumers shift to internet shopping, according to the report Thursday from the Housing, Communities and Local Government Committee.

Brick-and-mortar retailers pay more than their fair share of tax, while online retailers are not contributing enough, the report said. Amazon’s rates amount to around 0.7 percent of its U.K. revenue, while most street-based retailers pay double to eight times that.

The UK govenment's demand for stricter regulation of internet companies is only growing louder. A report from a House of Lords committee has called for the creation of a central "Digital Authority" that would watch over all the efforts to regulate the technology world, particularly online giants. While the new body would largely let individual organizations (such as Ofcom and ICO) do their work, it would coordinate those larger efforts and recommend "additional powers" if there are significant problems.

What people seem to fail to understand is that these companies are going to charge more to offset the taxes. This ends up coming out of the pocket of the consumer every single time. The governments and the companies they are taxing are probably all sitting around laughing while they do this.
