Beware of Extortion Scams Stating They Have Video of You on Adult Sites

Reports are coming in about a new extortion scam where scammers email you stating that they know the recipient's password, have installed malware on the computer, created videos of the recipient using adult web sites through their webcam, and have stolen the recipient's contacts.

The good news is that this is just a scam and no one has caught the recipient doing anything they don't want seen on video. The bad news, though, is that these attackers may actually know a recipients password from data breaches.

Yesterday a BleepingComputer member posted in our forums about this type of email scam and then security researcher SecGuru discovered a similar email, shown above, today.

SecGuru told BleepingComputer that the extortionists are finding leaked account credentials from data breaches and using those leaked passwords when contacting the victim.

Authorities are warning of an increasingly common scam where an anonymous email claims to have accessed a target's webcam and recorded them watching pornography.

The scam, which is strikingly similar to an episode of the popular sci-fi series Black Mirror, uses the victim's password in order to bolster its claims that the victim has been hacked.

A Dutch journalist first spotted the sextortion scam in the Netherlands on Thursday, reporting that scammers had already made €40,000 from the ploy. SecGuru, a security researcher in the Netherlands, then found a similar sextortion scam targeting people in English, Bleeping Computer reported.

Victims of the scam receive an email from what appears to be their own email address, with the subject line also stating their email address plus “48 hours to pay.”
[...] they have 48 hours upon reading the message to send them $800 in bitcoin or they will automatically send all of the user’s messages and videos to all the contacts in their device.

Sextortion scams specifically target victims by alleging that they recorded a user visiting adult websites. Bleeping Computer reported that the English version of the scam has received four payments since Wednesday, making about $2,353.
