I was talking to a retailer about 6 months ago when my new system was built, and I was forced to the horror of Win10 which is now frozen in time at 1709, and he stated that numerous customers were presenting to him with their 'free' Win10 just dying on the spot and forcing users to buy a full version.

So it was worse than a ploy, it was a trap.

Why is this 'new OS every 6 months' madness in place? There must have been a good reason at some stage. Any ideas?

    XenMan,

Do you know why an outdated Win10 OS was installed on your computer? I guess in March or earlier this year.

Have you tried to update Win10 from a USB flash drive made from the Win10 ISO? That is what has worked best for me.

    Desktop or laptop? CPU? MB?

Was Win10 installed in UEFI mode at the time the computer was built?

I use multimedia programs and hardware, as well as Sandboxie with Chrome.

Win 8.1 was good, but the change to Win10 for an 8700K was problematic and a check on the forums showed that issues are to be expected. So I adapted and modified to get the current Win10 build at the time working and have frozen it in time as I don’t need to update any of the programs I use, and my security is not dependent on MS patches.

I don’t have the time or emotional energy to change my custom Win10 settings every update or find new work arounds for my programs. I dual boot into Win 8.1 for gaming and Win10 recovery if needed.

The last 9 months has been like the old days on 8.1; no updates, no problems.

"Microsoft pulls Windows 10 October 2018 Update after reports of documents being deleted

Microsoft has stopped distributing its latest Windows 10 October 2018 Update. The software giant started rolling out the update during the company’s Surface event earlier this week, but some Windows 10 users immediately noticed their documents were being deleted. 'We have paused the rollout of the Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) for all users as we investigate isolated reports of users missing some files after updating,' says Microsoft on its support site for Windows Update...

Other Windows 10 users have been complaining that the Microsoft Edge browser and other store apps have been unable to connect to the internet after the October 2018 Update, and the update was even blocked on certain PCs due to Intel driver incompatibilities...

Microsoft was planning to push the latest October update out to all Windows 10 users next Tuesday, but that’s now likely to be put on hold while investigations continue into this major deletion problem..."

XenMan, yup, just update once, configure everything, lock it down with exploit protection and standard user, keep the apps up to date, that's it. Seems like the future plan against rapid release madness.

Don't leave out imaging. if not for that particular digital wonder, we would all be at the absolute mercy of continuous borking with no way back.

Two types of people in the world, those who image and those who are destined for catastrophic failure.

:argh:. And I am starting to think I even need to image hourly (MR7 Changed Block Tracking), like @Peter2150.

To be fair (and this coming from someone who had two 1809 upgrade failures), the Microsoft reversion to the previous build worked well.

But as I said before an Image is also of paramount importance always.

Just a Fun Fact about 1809 Security- easily seen by those that use VT Uploader:

1). Download and save eicar.com (you will have to disable WD to do this)
2). With WD still totally off (both Real Time and Cloud), try to use VT Uploader to send eicar to VT.

How cool is that (too bad that they don't do this with true zero day malware. Sigh...)?

I've been reading recent articles a bit and If I understand the situation correctly there are exactly 3 known issues with this update -
    1. user files wiped (as in unrecoverable) from default Documents folder (minority of users affected)
    2. Task Manager incorrectly reports CPU usage (apparently affects everyone)
    3. incompatible driver for a particular series of Intel onboard multimedia chips.

I'm in neither camp, just summarizing.
It will be interesting to see the changelogs (ok, KB articles) on tuesday/wednesday.

My CPU usage via Task Manager is fine (so not everyone), and no Documents have been wiped.

My experience only, of course (and this from someone with 2 prior failed installations due to self-created problems).

I just assumed as my Task Manager was displaying far off CPU values after the update (CPU usage summary was far greater than individual values). Looking at it now for a couple of minutes, it doesn't do that anymore.

Yes, but I doubt that either can from TRIM enabled SSD.

Good point @Minimalist-On a new SSD I recently been outfitting it became necessary to use the SSD Manufacturer's software to do what they call a digital-electronic secure erase that took but only seconds to render data gone with the wind.

So I don't know how they can recover files "IF" they were dismissed on an SSD. Maybe someone with more knowledge of those can elaborate how that comes into play with this recent Win 10 1809 ordeal.

I am waiting for the conspiracy theories on this one. Telemetry is probably a program of interest. :argh:

I am wondering what utility W10 used in 1809 to erase the files. Maybe Disk Cleanup ? It is tasked with erasing unnecessary files - system files, temp files, retired windows updates, etc. It may have been misdirected. Once erased, these files may not be recoverable.

Edit update: third party software say it is recoverable if disk cleanup was used (my error).

I never do an update without imaging the system first.

@Peter2150 burned it into my hard head enough times until giving imaging the most attention that it really deserves.

Nothing ruins a day like a borked Windows without a good clean restorable image to turn to.
