Yes, must have been a problem with certain versions. I have now switched to MPC-BE, can't believe I didn't do this earlier, the video preview function is awesome. Also, the file seems the be clean, I didn't notice any weird behavior or adware being installed.

Another one of those system slowdowns, without running MPC-HC or MPC-BE.
Thus, MPC-HC and MPC-BE are excluded as the cause of this issue on my system.

(No issues with CPU, memory, HDDs, nor any relevant entries in Event Viewer, as far as I can tell, so I'll need to do some more investigation to find out what's the cause of the issue - but that is not for this thread, of course.
    Edit, off-topic, just for information:
I found entries in Event Viewer, associated with the antivirus program's automatic signature update service.
The antivirus program's support suggested a program uninstall, cleanup, and clean reinstall, and I have done so.
With some luck, my slowdown issue was related to an antivirus signature update issue, and is now fixed.)

BTW, I have discovered some drawbacks of MPC-BE. It hasn't got any slow/fast motion buttons, and for some reason it makes some apps loose their "on-top" focus. Hopefully MPC-HC will implement the video preview function, is this already on their to do list?

About missed this one too. This version between the two is actually the one that seems to fit expectations on this end but both are really pretty good.

You simply cannot have enough good video players on board and in this camp especially Portable!

    MPC-HC v1.7.18 (August 31, 2018)
    Announcement
    Download (Github)
    Updates:
    • Updated LAV Filters to v0.72-3-gb951d
    • Updated Little CMS to lcms2.9rc1-36-gc2a1cd9
    • Updated RapidJSON to v1.1.0-401-g129d19ba
    • Updated ResizableLib to v1.5.1
    • Updated MediaInfo DLL to v18.08
    Changes/additions/improvements:
    • Dragging the seekbar is now much more responsive.
    • Further improved the behavior of fast seek (to keyframe).
    • For example when using any of the jump hotkeys (such as RightArrow), the maximum inaccuracy is now 30% of jump size.
    • Add multiple monitor support for ICC color management.
    • Changed default subtitle font to Tahoma. This should fix a problem that causes certain Unicode characters to be displayed as squares.
    • Support for parsing URLs with youtube-dl.exe to directly stream audio and video from Youtube and many other websites.
    • It is recommended to put youtube-dl.exe (https://yt-dl.org/latest/youtube-dl.exe) in the MPC-HC directory or in the Windows directory (or any other directory that is in %PATH%).
    Fixes:
    • Fixed hiding of playlist when launching in fullscreen.

The Spoiler looks improved in the right places. This is a reliable decent player so far and is a toss up with me VLC or this, and it's usually MPC-HC if nothing else but the nicely docked playlist it offers as another feature

    MPC-HC v1.8.1 (September 13, 2018)
    Announcement
    Download (Github)
    Changes from 1.7.18 to 1.8.1:
    Updates:
    • Updated LAV Filters to v0.72-12-g14744
    • Updated MediaInfo DLL to v18.08.1
    Changes/additions/improvements:
    • Added support for decoding AOMedia AV1 video
    • Added WMA to internal filters list
    • Allow using externally installed LAV Filters as internal filters when our own LAV Filters folder doesn't exist.
    • Added advanced option "AllowInaccurateFastseek", which is enabled by default. When enabled fast seek (to keyframe) is allowed to be very inaccurate (max difference 20 seconds) in files with huge keyframe intervals. When disabled the allowed inaccuracy is much lower, when deciding between a fast and normal seek. For example 30% of jump size.
    • If a playlist entry points to an URL, then display the title/label in player title bar instead of the URL.
    • Limit max video height returned by Youtube-DL to 1440 by default. Higher resolutions may not play smoothly due to bandwidth throttling by Youtube.
    • This value can be customized in: Options > Advanced > YDLMaxHeight
    Fixes:
    • Fixed crash when opening generic URLs. Was a regression since addition of Youtube-DL support in previous version.

Please, put the .zip contents inside a Folder before creating the .zip file. ;)
It is very annoying to see the .zip contents Spread Out (e.g. on the Desktop) after the .zip Extraction!

This will be the case for nearly all .zip/.rar/... archives.
Therefore try to always extract archives to a subdirectory (instead of "Extract here")
WinRAR, 7-Zip, ... and even Explorer give this possibility ("Extract to MPC-HC.1.8.1.x64\")

    Nearly all? Not all.
Luckily, there are quite a few Developers who have been smart/sensitive enough to
put the the .zip contents inside a Folder before creating the .zip file.
This shows Respect for the User.

Use 7Zip-select Extract- Presto! all the contents of ANY zip pour into it's own folder and won't scatter files all over your desktop screen.

    Simple. :)

No prob. I use WinRAR or rather it's still in place in Program Files folder but I found the portable version of 7Zip unwraps fully when sometimes on those rare occasions WinRAR complained about end of archive issues and aborts on me. :)

Just when I was bordering on showering praise over Windows 10 Video Feature, after updating it the Vids are choppy and virtually a total no go IMO.

Which makes me so very thankful that this program is continuing to improve because it is after all a pretty decent Home Cinema for the common everyday user and no license is required like those so-called top brands one of which I used before in PowerDVD Cinema Player.

This one being home grown of sorts from the developer doesn't rely on scattering additional processes that drain energy/memory like others.
