With SimpleDNSCrypt enabled on Yahoo Mail login site I get these pages in different Browsers. All Browsers are up to date. But when I return DNS settings to: Obtain DNS server adress automatically. I briefly thought of that. And I have not so far tried different DNS servers. Currently I'm using: arvind-io, de.dnsmaschine.net, dnscrypt.ca-1, & dnscrypt.ca-2. They are the only servers I saw that have DNSSEC support, without logging & without filter. The other servers are missing at least one of the above.
So far I got Yahoo Mail working again. Don't know if it's temporary. I did the following. On Simple DNSCrypt under Settings - Show Advanced Settings - Domain Blacklist. I entered: https://login.yahoo.com/, https://www.yahoo.com/news/, https://www.yahoo.com/ manually into the Whitelist Rules box but the entries didn't show up. So for the heck of it I went to in W7P64 C:\Program Files\bitbeans\Simple DNSCrypt x64\dnscrypt-proxy\blacklist.txt. Where I created a whitelist.txt which I also entered https://login.yahoo.com/, https://www.yahoo.com/news/, https://www.yahoo.com/. I imported it but again it didn't show up.
But it's not really any different from other "free" e-mail services that people use like gmail. They all scan your stuff and if you want privacy you pay for that for some company or setup your own server.
@zapjb So DNS Crypt gave your browser the ip address for upgrade.yahoo.com. What was actual URL you tried to go to?
Yahoo is no worse than Gmail or mail.com or whatever. Maybe VFEmail keeps your address more private, but I don't know. One would think that CounterMail, ProtonMail, Tutanota and so on would be better at that.
I believe years ago virtually no one maybe except mirmir knew about data mining & personal info harvesting, ad targeting any way near what the truth was & even worse now. I think once "They" have gotten a matrix of data from individuals. Even if no further information is provided. That individuals privacy is over. I believe these behemoths ability to predict any data that can be monetized into the future is 98%+ accurate. So my privacy & everyone one I know privacy's is over, has been & will be. My only concern. Strike that. The only concern I can do anything about is protection from individuals & non-corporate criminals.
It's hard to say. I mean, "they" know lots about my actual meatspace identity. Several decades. Education, jobs, money, marriages and divorces, minor traffic violations, etc. Maybe some suspicions of this and that, but no arrests. Close a few times, I admit. But whatever. All in all, a pretty normal guy. And "they" also know lots about Mirimir. I'm a pretty public guy. But what I'm counting they don't know is the connection between Mirimir and my actual meatspace identity. Maybe they do know, and are just watching for me to do something stupid. All I know is that they haven't told me yet Anyway, total privacy may well be impossible. But compartmentalization certainly is possible. And you get some privacy.
I agree with @mirimir total 100% privacy might not be possible. Or maybe it is but then you would probably have to been following all the best practises, compartmentalization, VPN, encryption right from the beginning and not post a single thing to social media about yourself, your friends, family etc... (or alternatively, do a reboot of your identity in real life, get new name, id etc..) But Im happy even if only 99% privacy. That will left me the 1% to deal with (and I pretty much know who they are)
I've been using Google since the beginning and from the beginning I knew that anything I put online could be viewed by someone else and to be careful about what I said in an email. For any really private communication, I used a typewriter and sent it by normal post. True, I didn't know about the depth of tracking and data mining to the extent I do today but I had some idea and a bit of useful paranoia. When Gmail started, I was one of the early users and, even then, I made sure that I did searches in a different browser than the one I used for Gmail and set my browsers to delete all cookies when I shut them down. I was also an early adopter of adblocking extensions, they were like a gift from heaven, especially with the low bandwidth I had back then. This is maybe 10-12 years ago. In some ways I was really sloppy compared to now but I still managed to keep a pretty low profile. The tracking and profiling is much more omnipresent these days but the basic rules I follow are the same. I have a much more sophisticated system to guard my privacy online but all the barriers I've put up would be useless if I didn't discipline myself and follow the protocols I've come up with over the years.
Limiting data exposure, leaks, compartmentalization is good, but difficult. I think pretending to be somebody different aka lying to IT giants neural networks is also good. Let's generate some noise to hide signal.
I meant reliability. Do you feel safe that yahoo will still be around in the future? I wouldn't. The process of transitioning an email address can take years to make sure you've updated everything. If it was me, I'd start the process of jumping ship now and not waiting until the inevitable death announcement and have to rush everything to another provider. That being said, there are privacy aware providers that offer a limited free tier.
There are some differences in functionality. For example, lets say no matter what you do, Yahoo continues to filter important e-mails as junk so your POP3 client never sees them. Good luck creating working filters to send all the junk to your inbox. Rogers, my ISP, feels like it has to insert its own password page from another domain instead of letting Yahoo handle both the login and the password. Recently migrated from Yahoo to Outlook.com and glad I did. It took a few hours (3-5 hours?) but now I can even switch ISPs down the road without having to worry about using a useful e-mail address. Send/receive using POP3 is also faster and more reliable. Some things I don't like about Outlook.com too, such as not being able to delete an imported main calendar...you have to delete each individual entry...so no web mail is perfect.
Yeah, I doubt it too if it will be around. Luckily, I use it for only trash mail and the really important stuff I handle with my own server.
I got mad at Yahoo and tried to ddelete everything and was going to delete the entire account. And to my namazement, it would nt let me delete any pictures. And they would show like 10 copies of pictures that I only posted one. The reason I got mad is when I logged in all I got was a black page. If I just simply logged into Yahoo and then clecked on mail, it would work just fine. But anyway, I haven't completely deleted it yet but I probably will.
