Microsoft has come a long way now. I can genuinely relax even if I forgot to install an AV on my parents computer now after installing windows.

What OS do they have? It's probably for the best to not assume the protection from Microsoft on Windows 10 would be the same on other Windows OS

No, but might been better for their sneaky reputation if they made Windows 10 WD backward compatible for 7-8-8.1 and I only leave out Vista and XP because likely the innards couldn't quite support all the powerhouse features-and we all know they wouldn't suddenly find some generosity in making a Kb for those (closed) O/S's in spite of the fact they are the real diehard supporters who cling on to them.

Panda seems oft-panned but looks pretty okay in this & other recent tests. Somebody please say something about Panda, good or bad. This test has aroused my interest in that lesser-mentioned AV here at Wilders.

As to Panda's FPs, I don't mind a few. Researching FPs gives me something to do on a rainy night when my cat refuses to play chess with me.

Here's some out-of-date info for you: I used it years ago (2010-2013). I was an active beta tester as well, and stopped because their support was terrible, the product was buggy and it had no self-protection. Hopefully, this stuff has been addressed. The products from the 2010-2015 era had recurring translation errors that were reported by multiple native english-speakers on their beta forum (myself included) and were never fixed over FIVE YEARS of betas, hahaha

Many centuries ago, the Felis catus secretly infiltrated our planet, migrating here from a galaxy far, far away. They are alien creatures of immeasurable intelligence and craftiness. However, my Felis catus is still a sucker for a Ruy Lopez.

But seriously... because of Panda's success on the test discussed by this thread, I am giving it a trial on 1 of my laptops. As expected, it is amazingly light and user friendly.

I feel comfortably sure that Panda's signatures are reasonably comparable to those of other mass-market AVs. Big deal... :gack:

What I am more concerned about is: HOW effective is Panda's behavior blocker? Does anyone know -- or have any *opinions* about this aspect of Panda's effectiveness?

The detection rate from signatures is very good. The behaviour blocker is not so good. I can't recall it ever having having alerted about suspicious behaviour on my system. While my computer doesn't get infected, I regularly install software and have not been alerted about any suspicious behaviour when doing so.

Uh... do you feel that the software you have installed should manifest suspicious behavior?

When installing software, it is quite common for behaviour monitors to intercept some behaviours such as writing to certain parts of the registry or accessing system files and it is up to the user to decide if they want to allow it or not. The same kind of actions that are performed my malware, can also be performed by legitimate software. The behaviour monitor does not know, if the changes are being made by legitimate software, or malware and that is why it will intercept the changes and leave it up to the user to decide if they want to allow the changes, or block them.

for most modern products, there are lots of variables. for instance: is the site it came from trusted or at least ok? is the file reputation of the originating installer good? is it signed by a trusted party? has it been seen by other sensors (endpoints) in the past? how new is it? has it done bad stuff in the past? - if it's unable to determine all of that, it'll monitor more closely and prompt or decide for the user whether the activity should be blocked.

A Really important consideration. Yesterday I was almost burned (no pun intended) when downloading from mirror 1. I noticed an odd looking file name so checked it at VirusTotal and came up with multiple infections, mostly PUPs. It looks like the malicious file has been replaced. That said, mirrors 2 & 7 are serving up a feast of hidden devils. I confess, for years I placed near implicit trust in known "trusted" sites for file downloads. Not anymore.

ImgBurn from Major Geeks is supposed to be PUP OpenCandy free.

It might be. 2 engines at VirusTotal flagged it, so maybe FP's...not really sure, but the two I mentioned above got flagged by at least 10 engines. I ended up downloading from Softpedia and it was clean.

Mirror 7 is a direct link to download the installer from the ImgBurn website. If you uncheck the option to install additional software, only ImgBurn will be installed.

They are both false positives. As Krusty said, the download from MajorGeeks, does not include any extras. Both Cylance and Cybereason flag a lot of clean files.

Where is the option to uncheck? Is it avalable after launching the executable? At any rate, I will scan everything now and also verify the checksum using certutil -hashfile from the command prompt.
