Google has just released the final version of its Android P software, which was first previewed at the company's annual developer conference back in May. This also means that we're finally learning what "P" stands for, after months of online debate.

Android Pie has a new feature called "Adaptive Battery." It applies machine learning to the problem of our ever-draining power cells.

Android Pie inclues other new privacy features. Google has created a separate permissions category, called Call_Log, that requires developers to ask explicit permission to access users' call logs, rather than lumping it all into a single "Phone" permissions group.

August 2018 Android Security Patch Available for Pixel/Nexus Devices

Android P officially released today for the Pixel, Pixel XL, Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. The update also comes with the August 2018 security patch built into it. Shortly after announcing Android Pie, Google published the security bulletin for this month. Nexus and Pixel C users will get the patch OTA shortly while Pixel users will get it with Android P.

There are 15 issues resolved in the August security patch dated 2018-08-01 and 28 for 2018-08-05. Vulnerabilities range from high to critical, with the most severe relating to the media framework and a remote attacker possibly executing arbitrary code through a crafted file. Google notes that there are no reports of customers being affected by these security issues. The bulletin for Pixel/Nexus devices has 32 fixes, and there are no functional updates this month. Unless you upgrade to Android Pie, a vulnerability leaves your phone trackable -- and Google won't fix it

A vulnerability in the Android operating system means that it is worryingly easy to track and locate phones. While the issue has been addressed in Android Pie, Google has no plans to patch the vulnerability in earlier versions of its mobile OS.

It's hinted should be in market distribution in USA with Android Pie!

Yesterday a mix of people who own Google Pixel phones and other devices running Android 9 Pie noticed that the software’s Battery Saver feature had been switched on — seemingly all by itself. [...]
As reported by Android Police, initially it was assumed that this was some kind of minor bug in the latest version of Android, which was only released a few weeks ago. Some users thought they might’ve just enabled Battery Saver without realizing.

The company posted a message on Reddit last night acknowledging “an internal experiment to test battery saving features that was mistakenly rolled out to more users than intended.” So Google had remotely — and accidentally — changed a phone setting for a bunch of real-world customers.

You’d hope there would be more walls between internal Android tests at Google and the Android OS that customers are using daily on their personal devices.
