Not me! I don't want it. For it to work, that means my fingerprint will have to be stored in some database somewhere. As noted in that article, when you make a purchase, your fingerprint is scanned then compared to the print on file. If a match, the purchase is authorized.

The resent rash of hacks has shown banks and other financial institutions cannot be trusted to keep our personal information from being hacked. I don't want the bad guys to have a copy of my finger print too.

They are going to have to come up with a better plan. At least with a PIN, I can change it whenever I want. I'm stuck with my fingerprints for life.

    I'll pass.

Agreed. I would want no part of this, period.

But according to the article the fingerprint is stored in the chip, not elsewhere. There will be no databases to hack.

Hmmm, not sure how I missed that. Thanks. But I am still not convinced.

How is the card supposed to be programmed with your fingerprint in the first place? Is the card maker going to send you a fingerprint scanner that you insert your card into that then programs your card with your fingerprint? I don't see that happening.

If it was local only, what's to keep a bad guy from creating a counterfeit card using their own fingerprint, but with your name and account information?

If users have to go to a bank office to create each card, can we really trust the bank will immediately purge their systems of all copies of our prints?

If they say so and write so on paper then yes. Reluctantly but I'll have to trust. Either way, the fingerprint scanner built-in will be a defacto standard in bank cards.

I see now this is not a new announcement. The Verge reported on this back in April 2017. And there it says customers will have to visit an enrollment center to have their print scanned, then stored on the card. That makes sense.

It also says there will be a full roll out "later this year" - and again, that was 2017.

    LOL

    Wait and see, I guess.

Maybe i'll just go back to cash only and paper checks. This crap is getting to be way too much. From one stance I can see they want to improve security and eliminate card account theft but then on the other hand what comes next? The bad actors always seem to find a hole in anything new and why should this be any different after all these years.

I've been using cash only for the last few years now. Once in a great while I'll use the credit card. I don't like using Checks because your account number is on the check. At first paying cash was a PITA, like getting gas for our vehicle at a gas station. You have to go in first to pay before pumping the gas. But now we are getting use to it. No Chip, Strip or Finger Prints. :)

They can call us a throwback or whatever but that's right. At least it's original and actually the way those transactions were always conducted originally before, uh, modern convenience?

Here in Sweden we have the problem that not many uses cash anymore, and banks are making it more and more difficult to use cash (since they dont earn money when so few use cash) so the business follows. Everybody complains about it but still people dont use cash :/ Even the Swedish central bank are worried and has plans to introduce electronic cash. Sweden has long time been early adopters of new technology, so I guess we are just a bit ahead and other countries will follow.

America sports a very rare and unique history regarding the COIN and the monetary value of differing forms of currency-metals-paper etc. Guess it can be considered as an early adopter of that sort of new trading techniques right after original Indian trading furs-handmade native goods and such that even in today's wacky world of exchange, early standard procedures are still looked on with some favor in spite of widely acceptable phantom artificial drawing of monetary figures, first pictures then print/ink-striking metals-and now digital electric display money :isay:

How do you get cash 24/7 without a bank-card?

Visit bank during open hours and load up. Just that simple.

I explicitely stated 24/7, but you're right. :) I'll probably have to resort to such things as well. IF the bank allows me to have an account without a card, that is!

I think a card is still safer than cash - AS LONG AS you remain in possession of your card and AS LONG AS you report it missing right away if you lose it or it is stolen. Then you are only liable for the first $50 in unauthorized purchases or withdrawals.

Of course don't do what a coworker did once and write the PIN on the card.

So someone comes up beside you with a scanner and copies the print from your card from 5 feet away. Next thing you know they find your print at a crime scene, lol. Unless you pay the ransom automatically sent to your e-mail or your phone at the same time!
