It looks like Uber has a growing interest in the behaviors of its users. According to a patent application filed by the company Thursday, Uber is planning to use machine learning to better understand the “state” of a passenger when they request a ride.

CNN suggested the patent could be used to identify drunk passengers, which is certainly one possibility. According to the patent, the Uber app will keep track of how many typos a person makes, the precision with which they click on links and buttons, how fast they’re walking, and how long it takes to request a ride.
[...] If a passenger is hailing a ride at 2:00am on a Saturday night, the driver probably knows they’re picking someone up from a night of drinking, it doesn’t require an algorithm to make that determination.

When asked for additional details about the patent, a spokesperson for Uber told Gizmodo the company had “nothing to share” beyond what is in the application.

Given the types of serious problems they have been having with their DRIVERS' behavior......perhaps they should be using that app to 'ferret-out' problematic employees instead?

Uber recently applied for a patent to use artificial intelligence to spot drunken drivers in a move that has cybersecurity professionals questioning the privacy implications of such software.

Thought the patent application doesn't explicitly states its purpose is to identify drunk or otherwise inebriated passengers it uses terms such as ‘predicting user state using machine learning” and “uncharacteristic user states,” The Guardian points out that would be the most logical use of technology designed to detect swaying and typos.

Adam Levin Founder of CyberScout described the technology as a possible privacy nightmare for consumers.
“Uber wants to use AI to evaluate how you hold your phone or the speed at which you type or use autocorrect,” Levin said. ”The major problem here is that this is not an exact science.”

In a move intended to increase rider safety, Uber has partnered with two companies, Appriss and Checkr, to monitor driver background checks continuously. The program has been in place for two weeks and has already led to the firing of 25 drivers, Axios reports.

Uber's partners handle two sides of the equation separately: Checkr provides the driver background checks while Appriss continually monitors safety records.

If a driver is charged with a criminal offense, Appriss can see that and forwards the information to Uber, which can then determine whether or not it should remove the driver from service. According to Axios, Uber started testing this program earlier this month in limited areas and has already caught 25 drivers who it deemed unsafe to carry passengers.

The flipside to this is that people charged with a crime who are eventually exonerated can once again apply to be drivers for Uber, thanks to the rapidly updated background checks.
