I liked StartPage, but unfortunately search results for multiple things I was looking for was not as good as Google, one thing I remember it missed a search result that Google had as first one, went back to StartPage and searched using the exact title of the topic it still couldn't find it!! even though StartPage is based on Google(?)
What are they censoring? StartPage claims to use Google results: https://www.startpage.com/eng/top-ten-ways-startpage.html But I guess if they're censoring the Google results it would account for the difference, though claiming "100% real Google results" wouldn't seem quite honest to me. I had voted both StartPage and DuckDuckGo, but after looking at TairikuOkami's and Minimalist's claims I'm reconsidering StartPage as it does seem it doesn't give 100% Google results as claimed.
Searches, whatever they find inappropriate. They started about a year ago. A search should just display search results, not to meddle with them as it finds fit, like filter bubbles, etc.

I find Startpage excellent for image searches. Other than that, I mainly use searx on desktop and DDG on mobile. (Surprisingly, Bing is often good for finding obscure academic papers.)

I'm not seeing anyone voting for Google in this poll yet. The author apparently doesn't consider it "privacy-focused" either as I don't see it as an option, unless you vote for it under "other".
I've been using Qwant for a month or two. I was using DDG but since it is US based (given the governments (NSA) history I'm a bit vary) I felt I'll try something new. It gives me the serarches I want. I have tried Startpage, but for me the searches are way to slow. There is a 2-3 seconds delay before they appear.
Until they removed it I was using encrypted.google with nearly everything blocked in uBlock and no cookies either. (it had the side effect of still allowing old image search by default) Since, I have tested a few but currently using StartPage, I`m not convinced the results really are are simple mirror of google's that are 'unbubbled' or whatever else they claim. This is just from casual observation rather than in depth testing. They all seem to have quirks or annoying features. (edit: now testing DDG)
Nice, it gives the same results as DDG, but by default images are restricted and it displays huge ADs (half screen) and I do not want an account, that would beat the whole of idea of a privacy. Any idea, how to customize this url to implement it into the browser? WHy do all search engines have to make this part so difficult? I had to write to startpage's support twice to get the link. If you want to make that url as your default search engine then: I don't know why you say you see ads and the images being restricted, I see (ad-free) images fine here without an account
Thanks. It uses Moderate filter by default, so it displays all results, but not images for them, so they are not possible to see, unless using an account or a custom url. I meant those news (enabled by default as well), it is pretty disturbing, obscuring the view. I do not mind some ADs, I do not even block ADs, but this is ridiculous.
Yes, that custom url should disable it, but it ignores it upon second search. It obviously forces users to use the account (for tracking?!). So much for this option. Back to DDG.

Privacy user would be someone who is concerned with their sensitive and private data, communications, and preferences. This includes information you create, information about you and information about the machine and/or network connection you are using. The issue then becomes how this information is collected, used, and distributed whether it be by a search engine, website, application your using or the OS itself.
I am using DuckDuckGo, but I would like find a "decent" search engine that does not use Google. Google seems to stack the deck on searches, putting what they want you to see first rather that what you are looking for.
I've been very happy with https://searx.me/ as default on the desktop. It doesn't have the DDG bells and whistles (like weather and maps), but it delivers me accurate and useful search results.
