Vess Popov, an expert in big data and psychometrics, spoke at Brain Bar in Budapest on the future of data.
Popov’s concern is understandable as he works for the Psychometrics Center at the University of Cambridge, a research institution that pioneered the study of psychology through big data analysis. They’re basically the ‘good guy’ version of Cambridge Analytica
We can’t trust companies with our data
Unfortunately it took a massive scandal like the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica disaster to get all of us interested in how our personal data is being handled. But where do we go from here?

“The sad answer is we can never know for sure,” says Popov with cynical realism. “Only thing we can do is work on the incentives.” The problem we’re currently facing originates in the defunct system we’ve built around people’s data.

“Mr. Zuckerberg has thus far failed to ‘follow-up’ on the many questions he couldn’t answer during the hearing, and Facebook has not yet responded to many other questions staff asked at a briefing held two weeks prior to the public Committee hearing,” New Jersey Rep. Frank Pallone, Jr., ranking Democrat on Energy & Commerce, said in statement.

“We are working right now to provide substantive answers to the over 2,000 questions we received coming out of the April hearings,” a Facebook spokesperson told Gizmodo. “We shared responses to the Senate questions last week and look forward to sharing responses with the House by the June 29 committee-imposed deadline.”

Earlier this week, Facebook submitted nearly 500 pages worth of written responses to dozens of US senators’ questions stemming from CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s April 2018 testimony before two committees.

In December 2014, John Rust wrote to the head of the legal department at the University of Cambridge, where he is a professor, warning them that a storm was brewing.
According to an email reviewed by WIRED, Rust informed the university that one of the school’s psychology professors, Aleksandr Kogan, was using an app he created to collect data on millions of Facebook users without their knowledge. Not only did the app collect data on people who opted into it, it also collected data on those users’ Facebook friends.

Facebook shared user data with 52 tech companies

Now, however, the scope of those deals has become clearer. Facebook has responded to a House Energy & Commerce Committee request for data with a 747-page response detailing the social network's data sharing deals with other companies.

All told, Facebook has shared user info with 52 firms, including Chinese firms like Alibaba, Huawei, Lenovo and Oppo -- some of these were already known. It has ended already partnerships with 38 of them (some due to companies ending relevant business, like HP/Palm and Inq), with seven more due to expire in July 2018 and one more in October. [...]

The document comes roughly two weeks after Facebook gave Congress a 452-page set of answers to questions Mark Zuckerberg didn't immediately answer during his testimony. It still doesn't explain everything, though.

The Washington Post noted that Facebook didn't explain why it didn't audit apps like the "thisismydigital life" app from the Cambridge Analytica scandal, or whether or not it had considered charging a fee instead of displaying ads. It also passed on hundreds of questions California Representative Anna Eshoo had collected from users. This new batch of answers may be helpful, but it still won't satisfy everyone demanding to know the full extent of Facebook's data practices.

Following the Cambridge Analytica data misuse scandal and the more recent discovery of a Facebook app that had been leaking data on 120 million users, Facebook is today announcing a number of API changes aimed at better protecting user information. The changes will impact multiple developer-facing APIs, including those used to create social experiences on the site, as well as those for media partners, and more.

Facebook has admitted a glitch in its network meant people who had been blocked were temporarily unblocked.
The bug, revealed by the company on Monday, affected at least 800,000 people.

“While someone who was unblocked could not see content shared with friends, they could have seen things posted to a wider audience, for example pictures shared with friends of friends,” said Facebook’s chief privacy officer, Erin Egan, in a blog post.
While only affecting a small percentage of Facebook’s 2.4 billion users around the world, the glitch makes troubling reading for those who use the blocking feature as a method of escaping harassment on the platform.

The disclosure comes against a backdrop of a continuing privacy crisis at the company. Late Friday, the firm disclosed 110 third parties that had been given greater access to personal data - exposing a wider network of access than previously realised.

The federal investigation into data mining firm Cambridge Analytica and its relationship to Facebook has been expanded to include an examination into the social network itself, according to a report from The Washington Post.

Specifically, investigators want to know whether members of the social network lied to lawmakers, the public, and investors about the massive data privacy scandal that broke back in March. The investigation is being led by the Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

nvestigators are also looking into whether the comments and answers provided by Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg during his Capitol Hill testimony in April were sufficient, and whether Facebook has made timely enough disclosures about the whole episode to both its user base and its investors.

Facebook posted earnings for the second quarter of 2018 today, with revenue and user growth coming in under Wall Street estimates. It’s the first time the company’s quarterly sales did not exceed expectations in roughly three years.

But this is still the slowest quarterly user growth Facebook has seen since 2011, and the company has pretty much stopped growing entirely in the US and Canada, which are its most lucrative markets, according to Recode. The revenue miss also seems to illustrate that the social network and its massive online advertising empire is not, in fact, impervious to bad headlines and an ever-changing and inconsistent approach to policing its platform.

In its earnings call, Facebook Chief Financial Officer David Wehner outlined how this recent instability in user growth would only continue to accelerate, and it may rise to as much as a single digit percentage point decline in the third and fourth quarter of this year.
