That was a good read. Like the progress they taken with it now gone open-source while keeping a revenue stream alive for them.

Used Ghostery for awhile on one of my own many browsers and coupled with others it made sites of more interest by keeping the bugs away so-to-speak.

Caring about privacy is now relegated to anti establishment corners of the internet?
I guess that means the good patriotic thing to do nowadays is to post a complete dossier of yourself online for anyone to use.
    Perhaps include a disclaimer;
This information about me is provided free of charge for anyone to use for profit or surveillance and may be used against me by government agencies including law enforcement and to discriminate against me by prospective employers
Then wave your flag and sing the national anthem.

    Well, I don't consider "anti-establishment" to be a negative :)

I use Ghostery on my Cliqz browser. Between the two I see essentially nothing ad-wise and virtually no broken web sites. That combo works for me as well as uBlocko on Firefox. Cliqz now owns Ghostery and Firefox owns a chunk of Cliqz.

Dude this is what many people are already doing and they will fight to protect their right to do it.

I'm not sure about the "fight" part, but most people do want their "free" stuff.

It's a good product, no doubt. But I still don't trust them completely not even after this news.

I haven't used Ghostery in quite a while. Just installed it in Firefox and suddenly remembered why I used to like it: it's comprehensive in what it blocks, it's very configurable, you can granularly tweak on a per site basis a la uBlock, has a very attractive and intuitive pop up interface... and now it's even open source :thumb:
A pleasant experience after all this time.

The question is, what does Ghostery give you that uBlock Origin (& appropriate lists) does not?

    Why trust something extra?

My opinion is that you do not need anything other than uBlock Origin & HTTPS Everywhere.

Automatic blocking of trackers/ automatic unblocking of neccesary functions for websites. Ublock is more manual. You can decide what to allow or block, but sometimes if you block too much you can break a website. Of course you could spent time finding out what script/tracker the site needs to function. Ghostery tries to do the job for you automatically.

uBlock is "more manual"?? What? It's purely automated, it auto updates the lists in the background.

I'm not talking about auto-updates. Have you tried the latest ghostery? You might understand what I'm talking about automatic blocking/unblocking if you test it for a while.

Then what are you talking about? As soon as you install uBlock it's good to go. So you're just lying.

No, I will not be trying it. They can't even send an email correctly, and you think they can reliably code an addon?

I have 0 reason to trust them.

This is exactly the reason that I still use Ghostery, I still haven't found anything better. Privacy Badger gave me problems, but will try it again. But uBlock + Ghostery is a pretty good combo.
