Hi Mary, if you checked manually today at 8:30, if you restart or cold start the computer tomorrow at about 8:30, the machine should check for updates automatically on its own. That is, if you don't check manually again between now and 8:30 tomorrow.

Another scenario. If you leave the computer on straight till after 8:30 tomorrow, the machine wont check automatically unless you restart it or cold start it at around 8:30 tomorrow or after.

    thanks Bo

Another question I see on the Task Manager that Cortana and Windows Shell Experience Host are Suspensed and with a green leaf icon. It's normal? For example if I have a notification fron Kis2018 (such Rapid Scan) I see the Shell Experience works and is not suspensed.

Another things, today WU search updates and there is nothing but I try the WU diagnostic tool for curiosity and there is write that are suspended updates but I have all the 3 updates for the 1803 version (flashplayer, malicious removal tool and cumulative update) so it's an incorrect diagnostic? alsao today this tool reported this. All 2 my pc with 1803 have the same thing, another 1803 bug?

OK, so perhaps I shouldn't have mentioned Apple, but I've also read reports on Dutch IT sites, and nobody can deny that it's pretty ridiculous.

Good to know. If I buy a new machine I will probably disable Win 10 updates, and install only most important security updates, if this is possible. That's what I currently do on Win 8, because from my experience it's not really that easy to remotely exploit most Windows security bugs, if the system is already protected well.

During the 60 days before I bought my W10, I read a lot about W10. Till that point, I knew nothing about it. Immediately before and after purchasing the new computer, I thought about doing what you wrote above but I quickly realized (based on what I read) and what I experienced the first few days I had the new system, that the key to enjoy a problem free experience using the new system was to play along with it, not fight it. So, I quickly changed my thought about disabling automatic updates.

It works, I haven't experienced any major issue. I got questions about the system that I don't have the answer but no problems. I am already in the latest version, 1803, no ssue whatsoever. All the stuff we read about the problems in W10, they dont apply to me.

There is a lot of stuff in W10 I don't like. The Store, Universal aps, but I am still able to use Windows as I used my XP and W7, and ignore the part of the computer I wish it wasn't there. I uninstalled every app that came with an uninstaller and dont use any app from the store. I update the apps that are left just to maintain the system properly but thats about all I do with them.

I disable a lot of settings regarding Privacy, almost all, and disable this and that and the more I disable the better, but since its me doing it via Settings, its healthy. If you use programs to do it for you, its unhealthy. Sooner or later you ll end up with problems. Anyway, theres no reason you wouldn't like W10, as long as you dont mess up with Windows. If you like the Metro stuff, you can use the computer that way also. So, right now, it is balanced, you can use Windows as you want.

First couple months of W10 I had issues, since then its been pretty much flawless. This is on a 6 year old computer. Did much of what you did Bo, what apps I couldn't uninstall with their uninstaller I used Ccleaner to boot them to the curb.

Also my post was a bit of a heads up in case members have noticed Settings crash when trying to Set Default by Apps and were wondering why.

Absolutely other apps have this problem. It crashes on almost every PC I have access to, and none of them are running that app.

Hi Stapp. I am using the portable version of Foxit PDF, no issue with 1803. So far, I haven't experienced any "crashing" issue in Settings>Apps>Default Apps or when I click any of the links for setting up defaults that you click on that page. Since updating to 1803, I opened all the links in that page without issue but only clicked to change one default (Windows picture viewer). After updating to 1803, Windows picture viewer was (to my surprise) still set as my default picture viewer but the icon that it displayed in Settings>Apps>Default Apps was not correct, it looked generic. So, I reselected it and that fixed the icon.

I read the Softpedia link, it mentions using old versions of programs as perhaps causing the issue in Apps>Default Apps. I kind of doubt it as that being so as I am using an antique version of KMPlayer from 2008 as my default video player, using that old version is causing no issue in my W10 with 1803.

    Windows 10 version 1803 microcode update KB4100347

    https://www.ghacks.net/2018/05/16/windows-10-version-1803-microcode-update-kb4100347/

There is write that Windows devices configured to download available updates automatically through Windows Update will get the microcode update automatically provided that a supported processor is installed on the machine..

You may download the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog website as well. It has a size of just 1 Megabyte and can be installed on machines running Windows 10 version 1803 or Windows 10 Server 2016.
My WU doesn't find it and I have the update from the Microsoft Update Catalog website, is normal?

Mary7, thanks so much for posting this! I had no idea a microcode had been released for 1803. I've been waiting for this for my Gigabyte machine with a Skylake H CPU. Gigabyte will not release any BIOS or MEI updates for it because they consider it too old. Too old.... Sheesh I've had this laptop less than 3yrs.

I see I will now also be able to protect my old Win 7 laptop with an Ivy Bridge processor too: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...or-windows-10-version-1803-and-windows-server
    Wasn't expecting that! :)

EDIT - whoops I forgot the microcode updates are only for Win 10 1803. Looks like I won't be updating my old Win 7 rig after all... Back in the cupboard it goes.

anybody knows what the "background data" option introduced with scu really "limits"? i mean, the description reads "limit what store apps and windows features can do in the background" but what is it it limits and to what extent? set to always or never?

I read your post yesterday but couldn't figure what you were talking about. Even now, I dont know what scu means. I searched scu in Google and nothing related to the April update came up. My guess is you meant the W10 April update.

I figured Background data had something to do with Network but couldn't find nothing in my Settings or searching the Internet. But today, the picture you posted helped me find Background data in my Settings. The reason I couldn't find it yesterday is because that setting is hidden. To bring it out, we have to click "Show settings for" and select Ethernet.

I found this link, it barely mentions Backgound data but it gives an idea of what is about. Anyway, to me, it looks like a good setting to set as.....Always. :)

Thanks guest, I figured the s was for Spring. But the official name ended up being Windows 10 April 2018 update. I think we should call it April update or W10 April 2018 update. Not Creator, the Creator name is gone now.

probably exchanges between the apps and MS servers.

the feature is mostly for limited data plans (so you would choose Always).
You can see the apps usage by clicking your preferred network in Overview (on top).
