Yes, but I'm not sure if many newbies are aware of that.

Yes, and they probably don't care at all either about what's exactly updated when they do an update.

IMO MX Linux 17 is the winner, easy, stable, best set of tools.

I do use Linux Mint. Solus & Manjaro also considerable. Solus budgie is smooth enough to consider it as usable linux distro. Now, everyone has their own preferences. One may first try linux in virtualbox or Vmware, then decide for themselves.
If they have guts & they are complete newbie to linux, then they should start with Arch Linux.

Yes folks, I am down to three distros now on 5 machines: MX 17, Kubuntu, and Mint KDE. MX 17 is my current favorite of those three.

I'm hoping we all hear from Bellgamin soon. Hopefully he hasn't had to evacuate due to the volcano about to blow!!!

That would be a valid reason. Stay safe, bellgamin!

Do you really want to learn Linux or just learn to use Linux. If the latter, plenty of recommendations above. If you want to learn Linux, start out with Slackware. My to cents anyway. :)

I have 5 linux distros due in on flash drives from OSdisk.com. I chose them based on comments in this thread. I shall try each for a short while. Will post conclusions when they are conclusively concluded.

Volcano is on Big Island of Hawaii. I reside on Oahu, several hundred miles distant. Thanks for caring!!
