I don't know whether to click Apply or not.

I only have this machine connected to my HDTV through a HDMI cable but I turned the TV off while I went shopping. I wonder if that is why Windows thinks apps look blurry? I can't see any blurriness.

NEW PROBLEM. Microsoft Store keeps crashing. The Store itself received an update a few hours ago. I could re-open it at the time, but now on all three computers running 1803 (and with the latest store update applied) the app crashes within a second or two of opening. It doesn't make it past the blue window with the store icon in the middle. Re-starting the computer doesn't help. Nor does running c-cleaner and re-starting, or deleting the usage history for apps in task manager.

EDIT: Culprit found. Flipping Zemana Antimalware has quarantined the Store after it updated a few hours ago. Just turned off realtime protection, restored the file, and added it to exclusions. The store started re-downloading (in my action centre) and reported it had installed, but I cannot launch it - it crashes immediately. Same behaviour with past store apps Zemana has borked (mail and calendar, Bing news, and a couple of others I can't recall now). Turning off realtime protection, whitelisting and restoring never seem to work with Zemana - I usually have to wait for the app to change to a new version to be able to launch them. Unfortunately since it is the store itself, not just a store app, I may not be able be able to do that. I'll be furious if I have to refresh windows on 3 machines thanks to yest another false positive from Zemana.

I haven't updated to 1803 yet (will do a clean install, as with any major update like this), but have they done anything to allow admin-level changes within the Settings app?

Although I would like to use a standard user account for daily tasks, one major annoyance of the Settings app is that it seems to only allow changing settings for the standard user, with no way to elevate to make admin-level changes. In the Network settings, for example, the setting to change the network type (public vs private) is not even visible when in a standard user account. It wouldn't be so bad if it were greyed out, but it's hidden entirely. And if I pull up Device Manager within Settings, there's no way to elevate so I can actually do something; I have to access it within the classic Control Panel to run it as an admin.

I don't even know what else may be hidden, and as more and more settings migrate away from the classic Control Panel, I may have to go back to being an admin at all times just to be able to see the settings.

Hi Brian, I just did the cleanup. In the end, I ended up gaining half of Gig of free space over what I had immediately before doing the upgrade :D. I did it via Settings. Before running cleanup, Settings still showed 26GB waiting to be cleaned but free space appeared to have decreased 3 GB when compared to the numbers I had on the 30th (I haven't downloaded nothing greater than a few megs since the 30th). I am happy though, gained back what I lost in space during the upgrade and more important than that, windows.old is gone, no remnants, no empty folder as leftover, nothing, etc.

First of all Krusty, you seem to have seriously bad luck pretty much all the way around! I am now running 4 different Linux distros on 4 older systems. You owe it to yourself to give Linux a shot man. Mint Mate, Mint KDE, Kunbutu, and MX 17 are a breath of fresh air to me. Yes, a bit of frustration and a learning curve, but glad I started experimenting with Linux!!

Hi cats, perhaps your dad is using a user account and cant change that setting in a user account. I am not familiar with user accounts but maybe thats why, I always used an Admin account. Last night I went to a friends who has a W10 very similar to mine, same brand but Pro instead of Home as mine, but anyway, in his computer, still in version 1709, I was able to toggle the setting.

Why does Edge now start just after Windows boots? Two machines that did successfully upgrade from 1709 to 1803 do this. I first became aware when I seen a flyout from HMPA. Also when running CCleaner I was prompted to close Edge first. Checking Task Manager after booting shows Edge is indeed running.

    How to stop this?

The times I seen a browser open immediately after booting, I came to realize this after it happened a few times, is because during the previous computer session I clicked by mistake the little blue Help MS circle in the right corner of File explorer. In my case, Firefox is the browser that opens with a generic MS Help page.

Not my issue, Bo. I haven't clicked any "Help" links on either machine.

When your machine restarts check Task Manager to see if Edge is running.

When I see it is not an issue as it is caused by clicking the Help button.

I am not going to restart the machine right now, but I think I seen Edge running in Task manger when booting or restarting and eventually fades away on its own.

After a brief experiment it seems that Edge only starts after Windows boots when it is the default browser. I changed the default to Firefox and Edge no longer starts after Windows boots (and neither does FF). Changed back to Edge as default and it starts after Windows boots again.

Great way to push me away from your crappy browser, Microsoft. :thumbd:

Hi Bo. Good thoughts but no - Dad is an admin (and logged into his usual admin account) - that was something I checked. I am also an admin. Seems some can and some can't toggle the setting on.

Also good news! My computers automatically check for Windows updates today - the ones I decided to leave to see what they'd do without me checking manually. Once 24hrs had passed without automatically OR manually checking they did an automatic update. My computers have always automatically checked on reboot or if it's been 17hrs or so since the last check on previous versions (whichever happened first), but on this latest version it seems the checks are less frequent and only happen on rebooting if it's been >24hrs since the last check. :)

My MS Store is still borked though. Zemana was the cuplrit for that though, not 1803. It's really bad for FPs.

Interesting. I use CCleaner most days and every time I've used it since getting 1803, I've had a prompt from CCleaner that Edge needs to be closed, even when I haven't gone near Edge at all. Chrome is my default browser, and I've just checked that the 1803 update didn't surreptitiously change my default browser to Edge, and it hasn't, it's still set to Chrome. All three machines running 1803 are doing the same. Don't know what's triggering it to run. Maybe Cortana? Though I haven't clicked on any web suggestions Cortana has brought up when I've searched something....
