What Software Can I get Rid of?

Anti-malware are main protection, which are necessary.
Anti-loggers are damage control, which are not forcibly necessary if you have a decent anti-malware backing up safe computing habits.

now if you love security software and like to play with them, this is another discussion :)

Back to original post, I like BitDefender a lot. It works very well, small footprint, etc. But for the Free version, I have one major problem - lack of user control over settings. Basically non-existent.

well, i cant agree nor disagree lack of experience. i am more traditional. so it might be as you said.

concerning "Windows firewall" - DONT disable it. it not only has lost of a firewall, it also concerns installing fonts, you cant use apps and some more which is vital for windows 10. (windows Defender or antivirus is also vital for using apps, same for UAC.)

One must never lose sight of the reason one is using a computer- it is to gain knowledge and certainly not to constantly upkeep 40 different security applications.

(Secret Knowledge here: Keep It Simple)

And Bill- an excellent point about other non-trustworthy things having access to one's computer (like children and other riff-raff)! Optimal here would be an Application that will let you set the security parameters and with which also are able to password protect these settings in order to secure the system no matter who (or what) uses it.

Huh? I agree Windows Firewall is totally suitable and a 3rd party firewall is not needed. 3rd party firewalls do NOT perform firewall functions better Windows Firewall because blocking ports is a simple task. But your comment about fonts and other apps does not make sense. If you choose to use a 3rd party firewall, you can still install other fonts and still use all the apps and programs you normally would.
This is not really hard. Start by having a standard (not admin) account for the kids and guests. Make sure the password required for admin access is very strong and not something another can guess.

It is important to remember most bad guys and mischievous minors are opportunist. They are not going to spend hours trying to guess your password. If a bad guy is specifically targeting you because they know you have some valuable information on your system, then you have greater problems to deal with. But that scenario is an exception and exceptions don't make the rule.
That's just 1 reason and not for everyone. In fact, I would say that is a lessor reason for many, if not most. Computers are communication "tools" we use to pay bills, communicate with business contacts, friends and relatives. They are productivity tools we use to create documents and spreadsheets, organize family photos, and more. They are shopping tools so we don't have to drive to the store. They are gaming streaming tools we use for entertainment.

Sure, I use mine to research, learn and to verify my facts before posting here in the forums (to ensure I am right before posting - because I hate to be wrong). I use mine to check the weather before heading out for a bike ride. To check the markets. But I spend most of my computing time performing other tasks besides researching and learning.

my 3p firewall dont turn off windows firewall (sphinx), but both perform well side by side.
but your words will point out that windows firewall behave like windows defender when installed a recognized 3p firewall.

I don't know what 3rd party firewall you are using so can't comment on that.

If by "sphinx" you mean this 3rd party Windows Firewall "control" program, I know nothing about it, but from what I read on that page, you don't need it.

As to why Windows Firewall won't disable itself, I can only guess that you caused the problem yourself. You likely created a conflict between the 3rd party firewall trying to disable Windows Firewall and Sphinx which is trying to control Windows Firewall.

Since you don't need a 3rd party firewall or a separate Windows Firewall control program, I recommend you uninstall both.

If you just don't like Windows Firewall, then install only your 3rd party alternative or Sphinx, but not both.

I wouldn't want to keep track of all that software and have to deal with potential problems. Windows Defender, Windows Firewall Control (Binisoft), several file and system backups and keep system and programs up to date.

Win 10 Pro 64 bit and Comodo Firewall. That's it for me. Over the years I've tried many different programs. I had an old firewall (Tiny) so secure that I couldn't get into my own machine. I've bogged others down with so much security software, to plug any possible gap in protection, that it had reached the absurd.

Comodo properly set up is, at this point in time, as close to bulletproof as you can get. It's all that's needed. I'll play with the other stuff in VMware but I've come full circle otherwise. Security is a necessary evil, but I want it minimal yet effective.

idd you have lack of knowledge of W10FC :p
and it has no mismatches to windows firewall, none.
it is very simple to use/create zones and chose them on programs. it is currently the only solution with a zone modell after atguard, LnS and outpost.
ofc the free&basic versions i think are obsolete, /me use the "plus". and its totally fool proof on a limited account :D

wfc /binisoft would be the only serious alternative firewall for me but it dont offer zones and it need net framework 4.5 (mandatory).

    i got an update, g2g

Sphinx firewall has NO control over built-in windows firewall, it's not a front end.

It's small, 12Mb memory use for both the service and its GUI. No HIPS, no behavior, no anti-anything. Just firewall.

Sphinx, aka "Windows 10 firewall control" officially, can coexist with Windows firewall.
But to avoid logging confusion, disabling Windows firewall is best, IMO, and that's how I use it.
Base filtering engine or Windows Filtering engine continues to run and do its job just fine.
Sphinx user help advises that you can run it either way.
