Only generational attitudes matter. Young people will not turn against fb [social media]. They don't know anything else. This is normal to them. It will not be slowed down. It will speed up. A lot of the minority [those who don't use social media] will be forced to, to get basic services, obtain paychecks & much more.

I think it is their news feed (FB teasers) that is the issue. Tweens and young adults are not ravenous consumers of news, but 'breaking news' always gets their attention. The substance of the information is seldom their concern. On that we can hold them accountable.

This ILK is NEVER going away. And it's influence on individuals will get STRONGER. It's only stoppable by the end of the world. Sounds funny but I'm dead serious.

I feel sorry for the video game/internet generation and am so thankful to have been a child before any of that was invented.
To begin to calculate how many trillions of childhood hours today that are wasted on totally useless video games and internet is very sad.
I hope it is all just a fad that that will die out when new generations of kids start to see it as lame because that is "something old people do" and come up with revolutionary new alternatives like, going out with their friends from school and riding bicycles, skateboards, rollerskates, and playing sports like soccer and tennis and baseball in the local park, while the old fogeys, their parents, sit in the house staring at a computer screen.

    Hi RockLobster,

I hope that too but I fear it may go a different way. Ever seen a movie called Surrogates?

Would be nice but I think it will never happen, it will only get worse IMO. Sad.

No but I just now looked it up and I will look out for it. It sucks we don't have movie rental stores anymore. Well, unless you want to call those stupid redbox machines a rental store. They put them outside and they all quit working when it rains because touchscreens don't work when they get wet!! Ludicrous.

Greedy is a nice way of putting it, considering what they are guilty of from a moral standpoint.

Funny enough, earlier this evening my wife came home from shopping with one of her friends. They had their 6yr old son with them.
She just now was telling me, the first thing the little boy said to her was, "Have you got FaceBook?, I've got FaceBook and Instagram".
Then he showed her his smartphone...

You can be sure, IF FB meets it's end, it's equivalent and worse will raise it's ugly head to take it's place.

Feels like a parallel world out there. I don't see the big fuss, but then I am not the typical target audience for anything mass media. However, it is fun to watch all the drama sometimes, in between doing productive and fun stuff.

It is way faster, and runs smoother. I still can't believe how bloated and sluggish sites like FB and LinkedIn are. Are those developers ******** or something? But to get back at the topic, I suppose all social network sites have the same pitfalls. A lot of people say they feel better mentally when they stopped using sites like FB. It's because eventually some people might start to become annoyed about everyone's "perfect life".

Well the thing is, some people have no choice but to join in the fray because they have to put themselves out there for business or ideological reasons,

An opinion and an observation, for what it's worth...

I thought when this time came, as it has, the "I told you so" would be more satisfying. I thought the schadenfreude was going to be exquisite. But for "I told you so" to work, the other person has to say back, "Yeah, you were right." But still, as before, people are saying, "What do you have to hide? I'm not interesting. I'm not dangerous."

I understand young people (whatever that means, exactly) aren't using Facebook. They are using other social media services, and they see Facebook as something old people use. A new service arises, and they flock to it. They'll use whatever because everyone they know is using it. Social media in general is here to stay. Some number per month or per year will quit social media, but most are never going to say, "Yeah, you were right."

EDIT: And to add, "free" services and apps, not just social media, hardly anyone will every say back to you, yeah, you were right. I can put it this way, I'm a longtime BlackBerry user from back when BlackBerry designed and supported its own hardware and OS, and I used to spend a long time on the forums. BlackBerry users would notice, and complain, when an app requested access to location, contact, calendar, or file system when the user didn't think it was necessary. BlackBerry users of the old school cared. So, where is BlackBerry now? Like social media, no one is going to say you were right about "free" services and "free" apps either.

Here's an ideal meet, and talk face to face.

    Is that so hard?
