Thanks for the article share this morning. No need to go on anymore about what might have been for MS, Bill Gates set the props for the Windows show and it caught on like a whirlwind of course. The future of Windows and Co. now has many roads to take and where it ends up, nobody knows. :)

What is the destiny of Windows 10 if most of the system engineers have been moved out of the OS division?

If I was a chicken I wouldn't want those foxes building the hen house. I'd be worried about how safe they are keeping my eggs.

This is going to be a gargantuan challenge for Microsoft. Spreading Windows thin over several divisions is risky. I'd say bordering on extreme.

Problem is everyone is blinded by "cloud" and "monetization".

I still don't get it, how can Windows become cloud based, it will always need to be installed locally no?

Yes I'm getting tired of this nonsense. M$ has lost trust from lots of people with all of this data telemetry AKA spying.

I'm not sure M$ cares if they lost trust. Advertising and marketing is pretty well developed to the point where it glosses over all that. And, besides, they're into cloud services now more than ever. So the desktop is an extension of that.

The individual guy like us, we don't matter to them.

Maybe it is going to be one, big, locally installed Web browser?
    Edit:
But only Microsoft's AI would have right to accept Web pages your are going to visit.

I don't think that they really know what they want or where they are going. Few years ago they were all about mobile (ruining good OS during transformation), now they have abandoned mobile. They included Flash in their OS right before everybody started to drop it. They talk about cloud but who knows if they will be still into it after 5 years.
MS has become unpredictable and I don't think that they have "big picture" about what they want in future. They will probably try many things and see what will bring them money.

They're flopping around in the tailwind of other companies. They're not leading anymore.

I guess they will be pushing Windows 10 S to all their enterprise clients, for the cloud.

Well, by now it's obvious that they don't really care.

I think an OS is too complex for that.

Perhaps you can post those pics as thumbnails, but I assume you're talking about the Chrome OS? I've read Chromebooks have become a huge success in the education sector. But I'm still not ready to dumb Windows for the Mac, Linux or the Chrome OS.

I run Windows 7, Android, Chrome and Ubuntu. When Win 7 finishes completely I'm not sure what I'll replace it with, but I know it won't be MS.

I just can't see any advantage with Windows anymore.

If you ask me it's jumped the shark and passed its sell by simultaneously.

    It's curtains for Windows. :argh:

"The first big clue about the OS’s future is that Microsoft’s “Windows and Devices Group” is now “Experiences & Devices,”". WTF? Experiences? LMFAO Maybe I am getting old FTBS!

I was gonna mention Chromebook too. From 7 PM - Midnight I am using that. During the day, Win 7. The Chromebook works as well for me as Win. I can do pretty much anything on the Chromebook I do on the Win box. In fact - many things are easier.

And when Win 7 support goes bye-bye I will NOT be moving to 10.

Sad in a way since I started with MS-DOS 1.0 and Windows 1 way back.

MS lost my allegiance long ago. Particularly with all the Telemetry BS. As far as that goes they can screw off.

If I peer ahead, I have no freaking clue what happens with "Windows". I can however to see a pretty clear future for ChromeOS.

Yes, it's so freaking annoying, they have ruined Windows with all of this spying crap. But the question is, can we trust Google and Apple?

No, I was specifically talking about OS developers, who can we trust? I wonder what people will find if they dig a little deeper into the Mac and Chrome OS.

I have no interest in Chromebooks. But I have heard good things about them from user Slyguy's experience over at Malwaretips
    https://malwaretips.com/threads/configure-your-chromebook-for-ultimate-security.80764/post-718267

Privacy-enthusiast might find this statement interesting

"Disable 'Help Google with this OS'
Once disabled it stops - in my estimates based on PCAPS about 90% of all telemetry and logging. It makes Chromebook one of the quietest operating systems just behind most linux distros, and legions less telemetry than Windows."

I trust no tech giants' practice at all, no matter what they say/do right NOW. Once their market share goes up to a certain point, they will definitely change their telemetry policy to collect more data, because they have to make money, that's the point that will never change. So for ChromeOS, it's only a matter of time before it goes Windows 10's telemetry practice.

For this reason alone, I exclusively use Ubuntu/Linux as my main OS.

P.S., I see Microsoft is doing a very stupid thing disintegrate Windows team to transition to Cloud. Their whole ******* ecosystem is based on Windows. And for many privacy/security-aware individuals/businesses, to put all their confidential info in Cloud for hackers to harvest is pure insane.
