Assigning IDs to installs is pretty bad, regardless of what they're used for. And logging even approximate geolocation. It's not what you'd expect from people who respect privacy.
I just added update.vivaldi.com to ublock origin's filter list in Vivaldi. Easy way to deal with this. I could put it into my hosts file as well. The article mentions deleting the unique user ID but doesn't link to any instructions on it and I haven't found the user ID just casually looking through the user folder and program folder. Not a big privacy issue but an annoyance nonetheless.
I also blocked "update.vivaldi.com" the very first time I installed Vivaldi. I don't think Vivaldi has any ill intentions but I still don't like it.
pretty ironic really that jon von teschner openly criticised chrome and opera for the very practice of assigning unique ID,S to their browsers and then does the very same thing with vivaldi. a case of not practising what you preach.
I reckon that it is here: C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Vivaldi\User Data Look for Local State Open it with a text editor. Locate a line starting with “unique_user_id"” and change it. I used FA7069F6-ACF8-4E92-805E-2AEBC67F45E0 but you could experiment with deleting it.
Indeed so. I still have one of the original installers laying around a folder when it first was all rave about as being extra secure? Courtesy exactly what you point out as it was touted as a better alternative at the time.
