Encryption Recommendations...

Okay everyone, was curious about your thoughts on a new encryption app. From using ax-crypt to best crypt and symantec, I was wondering if there is anything else that might be better or more user friendly. Not that those apps are bad, but I've been using them for a while and not even sure how effective they are. My one friend who is a good bit more techy said the one program was even cracked, which when it comes to encryption probably isn't the best and all that.

Back in the day I was True Crypt guy all the way, but we know how that went... So how bout it? What do you guys like, free or paid, that gets the job done for file and system \ partition encryption? Thanks in advance!

VeraCrypt is great. Give it a try.

I also recommend VeraCrypt. It is based on TrueCrypt 7.1a.

dm-crypt for system or FDE (if you're Linux user.), Veracrypt for container (haven't tried FDE), GnuPG for individual file or email. Maybe you need to clarify bit more, e.g. what OS you use, if you value usability more than security, etc.
IDK in what sense it was cracked. Every encryption can be cracked if one set week password/key. OTOH, a encryption program can be cracked due to vulnerability in the OS or hardware, tho some program employ some mitigation.

Hey guys thanks for the replies! So first, VeraCrypt, is it from the same people behind TC? (I'm not kinda paranoid for nothing!:)

@142395 Sorry, good point, using W7 at the moment.

Not the same, it has been there before TC abandonment as a fork of TC. It should work fine on Win7 at least for container encryption, and system encryption too if your PC uses BIOS. UEFI was not supported before but it seems situation changed, but not 100% sure.

Hey that's fine, I'll give it a try ASAP! (Just figure it's better to go with something a bit more stable and supported.)

EDIT: I should ask, just to be safe and satisfy, that whatever issues went on with TC don't apply to VC correct? Thanks again!

The weakest link of software such as Bestcrypt, Veracrypt or BitLocker is, and will always be, you. Guessing/cracking your password/encryption key takes so long it's never worth it unless your password is "Potato". Cracking your fingers/ribs is easy, however.

VC has fixed all the vulnerabilities in TC. With that said, TC is still safe since none of the issues were complete deal breakers. Just simple stuff like the fact that nothing in TC is stopping you from making insane amounts of guesses. VC uses iterations, so it takes seconds to guess a password = Brute force is meaningless.

Also, your friend is either full of **** or he's severely misunderstood something.

What you said other than that are true, but I think it is a bit harsh to say before confirming in what sense he said. It might be e.g. the program didn't use PBKDF2 or other so weak password was cracked, or sth.

@Beyonder - Ha, yes, good point, and I've heard that before from LE and people in general... It's easy to get the PW if you're under the hot lights or have a gun to your head! Obviously I'm slow on the uptake with TC, as I recall there was a lot of suspension \ questions surrounding why it wasn't being supported \ etc. And no he's more techy than I am, but a world class ball buster, so one can only guess what he really means half the time.

@142395 - Well, it could be a thinly veiled shot at me as well, the ole "my friend" when it's really me (you) anyone who uses that! In this case it's true, but I think it's just an older version of Symanetc with a cracked PW or similar... Took some digging on my own part to find out.

But as long as whatever theories, legit or otherwise, surrounding TC aren't associated with VC, well I can live with that!
