"Win 7 and 8.1 security-only updates are incorrectly documented as being available on Windows Update."

The security-only updates for W7 and W8 are only available from the MS catalog (or from Mister X). They are never sent via windows update. MS has not changed their policy on this, even for this update. Source= original MS policy, August 15, 2016.

I have not done any Win7 security updates in a few months. Is there a link where I can get only security updates?

Maybe best to go up in this thread to get all the updates Mister X has posted since the moment you didn't update your Win7.
    The IE updates are cumulative.

Ah yes. But also from that document:
This is a single/individual out-of-band security patch. So it is already against their policy. Maybe they will make an exception due to the severity of the vulnerability. On the other hand, if there might be incompatibilities with AV products they can release it on Patch Tuesday through the rollup to make sure there are no big problems when they release it.
EDIT: @Mister X's new post has already clarified it.

    Yes I think so.

I'm confused too: MS says that for Seven we must wait the patch tuesday, and then it release this security update beforehand ??

I haven't installed the first version (V1?) on my wife's notebook with Windows 8.1. Do I need to install the first version before installing V2, or do I go straight to installing V2?

No need to install v1, you go straight to v2. If you already installed v1 there's no need to uninstall it.

As per the January W7 security only updates...
    - Some KBs were reissued and one was replaced this month. It has caused some confusion.

My understanding is that KB4073578 only applies to AMD. It replaces KB4056897 which borks on AMD systems. If you have not installed 6897, don't install it - only install 3578.

On some AMD systems 6897 installed OK and there is no recommendation from Microsoft to also install 3578. There are some windows patch gurus who believe that even though the system is OK for now, it might not be in the future. They recommend the user install 3578 as well. I agree. AMD worked with MS on developing this patch, so I think it is good advise. Those updated files need to be there.

KB4073578 is just for AMD systems. It is not for Intel systems.

Microsoft is not recommending KB4073578 be installed on Intel systems. My understanding is that Intel systems require KB4056897 only.

No problem here, very easy to go into the "Microsoft update Catalogue" and type, "Security Only Quality Update for 2018", for Win 7 anyway. Thanks for keeping up with the updates in the past, though Mr. X :thumb:

Microsoft's notes that its 'Security Only' updates are not cumulative but it has decided to include the mitigations for Meltdown and Spectre in the February Security Only update, despite having done so in the January Security Only update. These include the updates for AMD-based devices.
