I have accumulated a large number of Cab files, presumably from Windows updates. Can I delete them (without repercussions) or should I leave them be?

I'm pretty sure they are placed there when running Windows Updates as I noted new cab files on the same day I installed the Jan 'rollup'.

Those cab files are still there after running Windows disk cleanup! :(

I'm sorry I can't help you. I don't use Windows 10 ATM and don't know if it places those files there during update and if it's safe to delete them.

    appster,

I'm using Win10 and I've never seen cab files in the C: drive root. Win10 or previous Windows versions.

I'd restore an image taken prior to this issue commencing.

I'm running Windows 7. Those cab files go back a year so restoring a year old image isn't an option! My system seems to be working well, it's just that all of those cab files take up disk space and make my C-drive unruly.

But you gave me an idea. I'll create a current backup image, then delete the cab files. If I encounter any problems after deleting them I can restore my current backup image.

I misunderstood. I thought the issue commenced in January. Your backup/restore idea is sound.

I'm sorry to state the obvious, but have you run disk cleanup 'as administrator' and checking all the menu in it?
