Hello, I wonder whether someone could please help me with getting WOT to work with the Startpage search engine. I wrote to Startpage support but haven't received a reply. I am using Startpage in Google Chrome and Firefox and have the WOT (Web of Trust, Website Reputation Ratings) extension installed. But having tried all sorts of settings I cannot get Startpage to display WOT symbols on the search results I receive from a startpage search. The usual symbols (green, amber or red circular indicators against each search result) are visible and available if I do a Google or Bing search - but not on my Startpage search results page. I have tried disabling all extensions except WOT - but still no WOT symbols. I should add that if I click on a Startpage search result to go into a suspicious website a WOT red warning does appear for the website - but not on the preceding search results page. Since Startpage is what we use at home almost 100% of the time (it is our default in Chrome and Firefox - and I have the same problem in both browsers) this does concern me - since WOT rating symbols are easy for family members to be warned against some sites they may not wish to visit - or override when necessary. Can someone suggest the possible cause of the above problem - and a possible solution. With thanks.
i think it has something to do how startpage presents its results. WOT is not but, but also questionable. i would prefer another advanced link killer. (i use ublock with several black lists)
The old WOT for IE still works OK with StartPage. So, I do not think StartPage has changed something intentionally to disable WOT.
Thanks for the replies. I gather that WOT generally doesn't function fully with startpage - and its not something specific to my system setup. zapjb - I agree WOT can be untrustworthy itself since many sites are 'blacklisted' (red symbol), only because some zealous people who are anti this or that comment negatively or viciously - even though the sites themselves are quite harmless in themselves. This is where one uses the option to override WOTs warnings. Overkill - duckduckgo is very good; we would use it regularly - particularly because its aesthetics are excellent; but as far as I can see it has no simple and full option to time-limit the results (only options are for past day, week or month); they have been promising to extend this for a while but I haven't understood why the facility is still not available.
WoT's level of untrustworthiness has been earned because of matters beyond that: https://www.ghacks.net/2016/11/01/browsing-history-sold/ https://www.ghacks.net/2016/11/05/mozilla-and-google-remove-wot-extension/
wsshrugged: Thanks for the above interesting - and revealing - links about WOT. Yes, certainly something of a wakeup call for me! Also greatly interesting, perhaps, is the possible workaround to prevent extensions communicating/stealing user data; this is suggested by Tom Hawack in the followup comments to the first link you gave. He says: Using uBlockO on Firefox I’ve removed chrome-extension-scheme from the white-list and added it as follows to ‘My Rules’ : chrome-extension-scheme * 3p noop chrome-extension-scheme * 3p-frame noop chrome-extension-scheme * 3p-script noop This limits an add-on’s prosperity — if applicable — to communicate beyond the rules assigned to uBlockO. I do use UBlockO - so will work with it more intensively than I have before; your post lead me to install TCPview to help me become more aware of the domains my computer is communicating with. Thank you.
