My Netgear D6400 has just received a firmware update.

If you have a Netgear modem or router it might be a good time to check if a firmware update is available for yours too.

Even if you don't have a Netgear, maybe check your provider too. :thumb:

In most cases that I know of personally, Netgear is fixing more vulnerabilities and enhancing their GUI much much more often than fixing any questionable updates. And I did computer networking and security work for more than 20 years, plus I have installed and updated the firmware in more Netgear routers than a lot of other folks have.

You may be right, but three updates this month? The last before those was released back in April July.

Edit: US date format tricked me.

I have the Netgear Orbi. Every time they do a firmware update, they introduce more bugs. Take a look at the Orbi Forums and you will see how they treat their customers and how many really upset people are there. They do NOT give you a choice on whether to update the firmware or not. It happens automatically, you can't stop it, and then all of a sudden the new firmware causes disconnects from your devices. I will never buy another Netgear product.

Yes, LOTS of problems with the Orbi and virtually all of the seamless WiFi multiple-unit whole-home units on the market currently. Personally I would NOT own or use any of these current generation of products.

My Portal Router also gets firmware auto updates.

Actually, auto-updating has an advantage and that is if the manufacturer issues updates earlier before you are aware of the problems you will be protected. Provided the updates give less problems.

Coming to the Netgear Orbi. I'm thinking of getting one especially during the later part of the year when it incorporates the Netgear Armor (powered by BitDefender). Looks like a good combo of a router with an AV.

Thinking of getting the Orbi Pro instead with additional features especially with the different SSIDs

What do you think? Any advises to give?

    Thanks

Yes, check out the Netgear Community Orbi Forum and see all of the problems they have caused with their firmware updates. Some are having no problems, many are having major problems. They do not provide a way to stop the automatic updates if you get a bad one.
    Be careful.

Yeah, but I don't know how much longer it will be supported. My older Netgear hasn't received any updates since 28/11/2016.

    D6400 Firmware Version 1.0.0.88 Released

A bit more specific detail this time:
    https://kb.netgear.com/000061053/D6400-Firmware-Version-1-0-0-88

If you have a Netgear it might pay you to check if your model has any updates.
