Trying Macrim 7 free to see if I like it. But have a few questions. Most others have you make a boot disk on a CD or flash drive. Macrim had me do that also. But then in the help files it said "Windows cannot boot from a USB connected drive. This is a restriction imposed by Windows. If you clone your system disk to a USB connected external drive then, to boot your clone, the physical disk must be removed from the USB caddy and attached to your Motherboard SATA port." This cant be true. Sort of want to make me stop and go back to the crappy Acronis. Also confused with what I need for a full disk image. Of course I want it to include windows. Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows or 'Image selected disks on this computer'. Thanks for any help
The statement that "Windows cannot boot from a USB connected drive" is correct within the context of "clon[ing] your system disk to a USB connected external drive." However, OS drive cloning is entirely different and distinct from creating and using WinPE-based Reflect rescue media. Microsoft's boot restriction applies only to booting the full Windows* operating system. It does not prevent booting any WinPE-based rescue build on a UFD or other USB-connected external drive. If it did, it would make all such rescue media pretty much useless. Neither Acronis nor any other WinPE-based rescue media would be able to boot that way either. * The Enterprise "Windows to Go" edition is a special case not relevant to this issue. The first "Create an image of the partition(s) required to backup and restore Windows" option does what it says but only what it says. It creates a backup image of just those partitions essential to booting the Windows operating system and nothing more. It acts as an exclusionary override if any other partitions (whether on the same drive or any other drive) have been selected in the user interface screen. The second "Image selected disks on this computer" option allows the user to select whatever individual partitions and/or entire drives are wanted for inclusion in the backup operation and creates a backup image in accordance with those user selections. If you have any data partitions ("D:", "E:", etc.) that you want to include in your backups, you definitely need to use that second option, even if they're located on the same physical drive as the OS ("C:") partition. Be assured that you're not the only one who finds that issue confusing. Personally, I regard the exclusionary way in which Macrium has implemented that first option to override the user's own selections as very stupid and dangerous and I've said so since first using Reflect v5, but obviously they don't agree.
MIG issue after v7.1.2718 update: Some users (example here) are currently reporting issues when the Reflect v7.1 "MIG" component is disabled or uninstalled after the v7.1.2718 release which included an update for that component. The error (0x80070510) appears to indicate that some residual "storage policy" continues to block image file operations even after MIG removal. Other than the usual diversionary screed from the usual source, there has been no confirmation or response as yet from any official Macrium rep. __ -- Addendum -- NEW UPDATE: Release Notes Bug Fixes v7.1.2722 - 21th November 2017: MIG not disabled For some customers, Macrium Image Guardian would still be active when disabled in the settings dialog. This has been resolved. Credit where due: At least they're quick when problems are identified and pointed out for them -- sometimes. If only they were as quick to implement their own promises.
You're welcome. You'll undoubtedly come upon some other particulars amongst the backup task definition templates and retention and housekeeping parameters that aren't exactly intuitive. The KB articles are quite good on specifics, but they require a fair amount of cross referencing to put it all together. So don't hesitate to ask for clarification as may be required.
More v7.1.2718 & v7.1.2722 Patch Issues: Users are reporting that the Macrium patching process (i.e., using Reflect's "Check for Updates" option) fails for those who have chosen not to include the optional "MIG" component in their Reflect v7.1 installations. In such cases, the update halts with the error "Cannot delete target file mrigflt.sys". While there has not been any response from any "officially declared" Macrium representative as yet, such errors are entirely consistent with other patch mishandling issues noted and forewarned here previously. In essence, Macrium's current patching process is incapable of recognizing the user's primary installation options. Patches therefore attempt and fail to overwrite component files, including kernel mode device class filters, without required handling of related Windows services and registry entries that were either not properly installed in the first place or were subsequently removed. In the circumstances, it is entirely a matter of luck that the consequences of Macrium's sloppy patch mismanagement have been relatively minor to date as the potential for much more disastrous results is certainly not absent. Nevertheless, both the "gatekeeping" misdirection and the apparent "official" indifference to such issues appear likely to continue indefinitely.
Personally I didn't experience this error when patching by latest version. I guess I must have been lucky
In one sense, yes it's just luck, but not without some rational "per user" influences and explanations. It would depend, for example, on the individual patch sequence and whether it included a previous patch that overrode the user's choice not to install the "MIG" component. So, if you skipped the v7.1.2718 patch and went straight to v7.1.2722, that might possibly explain why you didn't get hit by the latter's need to replace the mrigflt.sys driver file. Admittedly, however, that involves some guesswork on my part as what I've seen of Macrium's patching process itself hasn't been fully consistent. For that matter, I'm not at all sure that they'd be able to account for all of its variables themselves. Since my previous post, they're now asking users to submit tickets for them to investigate further. The underlying issue is clear enough, but the details are quite muddy. __ P.S.: Updating with the full version installer also avoids the patching issues, of course.
Hi, Just being curious: Is there perhaps a public announcement for a Black Friday / Cyber Monday deal for Macrium? Thanks.
Hi Arvy, I have a (perhaps dumb) question: How (and from where) to download the full latest version installer if you have a paid-for licence? Question for both version 6 and 7. Does the link you got when you bought it, always give you the latest version when you use it again, or is there another way? Sorry if this is a dumb question. Thanks in advance.
From their FaceBook page... Act fast to get the best deal! Macrium Reflect Home Edition, Black Friday discount coupon code: FBF-K4L-WKK Thursday 23rd - Friday 24th = 40% discount Saturday 25th - Sunday 26th = 30% discount Monday 27th - Thursday 30th = 20% discount https://www.macrium.com/products/home/
Well... I look a little bit like Arvy anyway On each product page you will find a DOWNLOAD TRIAL link. Using that will get you a small downloader. Use that downloader and you will get an inquiry as to what you would like to download. If you have a license, offer it there and you will get the proper latest version for the license you offered.
Nope, I didn't skip a version, installed all of them and also all of them through built-in update option (didn't download whole installer). It's also true that I never installed MIG component so maybe that has something to do with it.
Nothing dumb about the question so far as I'm concerned. In fact, Macrium's methods for product acquisition are just a little unusual. The link that they send to you does not download the setup executable file directly. Instead, it downloads a "download agent" executable (ReflectDLFull.exe) which you can then run in order to get the Reflect edition and version for which you purchased a licence key. Details in this KB article. The "download agents" are available from updates.macrium.com/reflect/v6/reflectdlfull.exe and updates.macrium.com/reflect/v7/reflectdlfull.exe for v6 and v7 respectively. As Macrium product releases are made available via a CDN server system, either of those agents should always get the latest Reflect release for that major version and the edition that corresponds to the licence key that you enter. __ P.S.: Thanks Froggie. I posted before seeing your reply, but I'll leave it just as acknowledgement.
Yes, possibly. But I hesitate to speculate further on possible combinations and permutations of circumstances that might influence end results of the current patching process. It is very clear, however, that it disregards the user's installation option choices when it comes to updating driver files and related DLLs. We'll just have to await further authoritative responses from Macrium's "official" representatives ... if any are forthcoming in their public forum.
Is the 40% discount also on upgrades? 40% discount on the 50% you get when upgrading? (also the 4 machine variant?) (There seems no easy way to check; you need to request an upgrade before seeing prices? ...)
