Two 11 year old machines made it thru the upgrade? I find this very amazing. :) Also, reassuring--I am having vague concerns about sudden incompatibility after one of these big humdingers maybe five years down the road. So, this is very cool. :)

Don't get too excited. I have an 8 year old laptop that appears to be incompatible. BSOD as soon as it hits the desktop. Every time. Graphics issue. I expect the odds of an updated driver are zero. I will never buy anything with AMD graphics again.

Maybe if you Google the model of your video card and "Windows 10," you may find some solutions. Or if you post the the details of your video card here, I can see what I can find. I've installed Windows 10 on many old computers and have never had an video related BSODs.

If you using computer with sufficient amount of free space, I'd just let Windows automatically delete the old system data, which happens to be in 10 days time. I believe in the Idiom better safe than sorry.

'Controlled folder access' feature is a step in the right direction. I personally think It's lacking some customizability. Pre-defined and non-customizable folders already covered are Documents, Pictures, Videos, Music, Desktop, Favorites.

I don't like that I don't have the ability to restrict a specific app to specific folder or folders. The controlled folder access works on a global level.

LibreOffice. Every-time I launch it, I see ' Unauthorized changes block' soffice.bin. If it isn't detected trying to make changes in the desktop folder, It is seen trying to with Documents folder. Just on launching and doing nothing else. If you using LibreOffice Quickstarter, this influence the behaviour some.

Anything that saves, modifies, or deletes to Documents, will need to be added. Explorer, Browser to save pdf and whatever. File Manager for saving, editing, and delete operations. Documents is used by various apps, we'll see growing list of allowed apps just for Documents permission.

Internet Explorer understandably causes a trigger, because of Favorites is one of the system protected folders. However I'm seeing it complain just about trying to access non-existing Chinese desktop folder. Nothing about the Favorites folder.

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update went in smooth, and have been using it since the 17th and all seems fine. I see various improvements, and really like.

I tried Controlled Folder Access but toggled it off again for now. It will take quite some baby-sitting to get it to work for me.

I've been googling this since the first day it happened with no sign of it happening to anyone else. It's an Alienware M17 from 2009 with Radeon 3870x2 graphics. The update installs fine and when it hits the desktop it's a BSOD with error code 0x00000113. If you so much as even look into the situation I thank you for your time. Due to it's ago my expectations are low. Otherwise it works fine and I have used it daily since it was new, and have taken it from Vista through Windows 10 without any previous issues.

I have upgraded 2 fast Win 10 laptops through Windows update, and it worked (even though I make sure that any security software is uninstalled). Still there are bits and pieces that somewhat don't seem to be right.

I decided to do a clean install for both computers and I must say it is a different feeling from an update through Windows Update, including graphic drivers that seem to be provided by the clean install, and other small things that are somehow ironed out with the clean install. It is time consuming though, as re-installing all programs can take the best the part of a day.

As a matter of interest, were either or both machines upgraded from prior versions of Windows?

Although, I'm sure clean installs are no doubt best, MS can't expect that of ordinary users, especially if they bought Win 10 machines.

The Windows installer can "update" the graphics driver during the clean installation, but this is not necessarily good. For example, in certain Lenovo computers it can cause serious problems, up to the point of making Windows unusable.

Yes, confirmed, during a clean install a couple of months ago here with the Y900 and the Nvidia 1080 GPU, and don't know if there's a way to selectively install only Windows updates while blocking Nvidia's. The choices in Settings/Updates seem global, not selective. I'm going to look into this further, there were no bluescreens but a long cycle of install-fail-reinstall that you'd definitiely want to avoid.

One is a 4 years old Samsung which came with Win 8, I only had problems upgrading through Windows Updates as long as Samsung was in charge of updating graphic drivers. With Win 10, MS managed graphic drivers and everything was fine only with clean installs.

The second machine is a 2 years old Asus which came with Win 8.1, it always updated without any problems through Windows Update, although I wanted a clean install as it has never been done since it was purchased, and for the first time the Invidia GD and an update are showing in "Programs and Features". It goes without saying that the machine is working perfectly, and videos and films seem to display a better image quality.

@ Robin I also agree that the latest Graphic drivers can cause problems in some machines, therefore taking a system image is a must IMO (there is also MS Windows.old in clean installs which gives the possibility to revert the installation).

    xxJackxx,

If you have TBOSDT you could "Remove all installed drivers" while offline. Just a thought. I'd certainly try it to see if you could get Win10 to load to the desktop.

I haven't yet. I have considered it but it would take a lot of time and if it did work a lot of activation hassle on 3rd party software. I may do it to see if it works and if it fails I can restore a backup. Again. If it works I guess I'll go from there.

I don't have that. I at one point tried some troubleshooting and got into safe mode, which worked. I then removed all ATi drivers and it will boot to desktop with the Microsoft standard driver but it flickers and is low resolution. I tried 3 different revisions of ATi drivers and they all BSOD. I may try a clean install as mentioned above but ultimately I will probably buy a new laptop when the budget allows.

Ok, a clean install works. Unfortunately nothing is installed. If I were to get this TBOSDT what does the "Remove all installed drivers" do? Are we talking ALL drivers or all video drivers? Though it works as is, I will likely restore my image to either deactivate all of the software I can to reactivate on a clean install, or try to fix it since I know it can be done.

--Whoops, too soon. After applying the cumulative update and rebooting it goes into the BSOD loop again. I don't think it's gonna work.

I wanted to pass along something about the Creators Edition that I found. One particular AMD-based system with a SSD became very slow after the 1709 upgrade. I ran some tests and found that disk access was painfully slow. I then installed the latest AMD chipset drivers and the laptop started running fast and normal again.

Hi Mantra, I have W10 Home and turn off WD via registry, I cant find any task related to WD in Windows own Task scheduler. The way I turn off WD is same as you doing it via Group policy. But if you disable WD via Settings or Security center, that's just temporally off so you probably should expect to get the tasks as in the picture when you do it that way.

It's used when transferring an OS to different hardware. Like a Sysprep "after the fact". It's supposed to remove all drivers but I don't think third party drivers such as nVidia or Realtek are removed. I'll check. When you restart Windows you see drivers being reinstalled so it's possible your "bad" drivers would be reinstalled. I'm just guessing.

    xxJackxx,

nVidia and Realtek drivers are uninstalled but reinstall soon after Win10 starts.

1709 is different from 1703 in that you must not remove the Storage Drivers. So choose Remove all drivers except Storage Drivers.
