I don't use Maps but it appears the Ethernet setting there only applies to Maps.

I suspect that if the network based Ethernet metered connection is enabled, it will override the Maps Ethernet Maps setting. You will have to test to see what happens.

Now I've got another problem on my main machine. I tried enabling the Touch Keyboard button, but didn't like it so disabled it. Now every time I restart this machine the bottom third of my screen is filled by this Onscreen Keyboard.

I never had any trouble with any of the earlier upgrades but this one bites!

Edit: My main machine is now back to 1703.

    Krusty,

My luck is holding. I upgraded my son's Dell XPS laptop. Win 10 Home x64. The C: drive gained 4.6 GB of Free Space.

    Some good news finally.

On another older laptop I've just finished a fresh clean install of Win10 x64 1709 and so far Start menu seems to be working as designed. Hardly any of my favourite programs installed as yet but I'll run as is for a while and see how the machine behaves.

Thats good news, I am glad to hear.
Good idea, Krusty. IMO, the lesser amount of security programs you install, the better the chances of a successful experience with W10.

Bo, I haven't even installed Firefox yet.

One major difference this time is I haven't bothered with O&O Shutup10. So far I've only disabled what can be disabled on Windows 10 Home Edition.

I have disabled Cortana using a registry key. Yeah, I know you don't hear from her it, but I like it disabled. I've also enabled Windows Defender PUP detection with a registry key.

Other than that it is pretty much a stock standard install, but then so was my last attempt on my newer laptop.

Thats all pretty good. Specially staying away from O&O Shutup10.

My Cortana is disabled, I was given the option to do it during setup, the first time I started the laptop. I think its OK you disabled it via Registry, but is you who is doing it. That should work fine. The problem is when you start using other programs to disable features in W10. And then it becomes a habit. You want to stay away from that kind of programs. Those programs mess up the system.

You can install Firefox. Thats not going to hurt W10. I use Firefox. It works great. No issue whatsoever.

Although its relevance (if any) to the specific issues mentioned here isn't clear, my comment under that AskWoody topic "More problems with Win10 FCU – missing icons, no Start entries" may also be of some interest. Individuals can check their own Windows registry HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WaasMedic entries to determine whether it applies to their own installations.

On secondary machine, only Edge and Weather app tiles appear in Start Menu pop-up.

But I notice some apps e.g. Candy Crush Soda Saga  and others are in the Start Menu, sometimes as 'New', which they aren't / shouldn't be? And some are not - Calculator, Calendar, Camera, etc.
I don't really use apps, so not sure of all the default ones that are missing. ... Not a show-stopper for me, but I hope MS can patch this.

No such issue on primary machine.

I'm pleased to say that I have installed most of my programs on this machine now and Start menu + other features are still working as expected.

Maybe O&O Shutup10 was the problem all along on my machines?

    Your mileage my differ.

More than likely it was. Such software can cause problems, as noted by How To Geek last year.
Why You Shouldn’t Use “Anti-Spying” Tools for Windows 10.
I've upgraded five computers so far, from Creators Update to Fall Creators Update and it's working fine on all of them.

Well, I installed 1709 on the machine I had trouble with the other day and I'm still getting, "Task host is stopping background tasks. (MS\windows\plug and play device install reboot required). If I wait the spinning dots spin for a while and I'm back in Windows with Start menu not responding. If I click Shutdown (or Restart) anyway next time I'm back in Windows the Start menu is unresponsive again.

No O&O Shutup10 installed this time.

Start menu is currently working so I'll leave the machine alone and see what happens. If it stops responding any more than I'll be back to my 1703 image with 1709 hidden again.

A clean install of Windows should not have these bugs. A complete lack of quality control at M$.

M$ fanboys feel free to keep your thoughts and comments to yourself.

    Thanks.

Is that happening as soon as the install has finished, or have you installed some software?

As soon as Windows install finished it happened, and it's happened again when I've only installed CCleaner to remove some applications Windows won't let me.

    Paul,

In your computer with the Start Menu issue, did you update from Windows Update, ISO on the HD, DVD or USB flash drive?

I just did some Googling and did not find much useful information. It seems it could be a video or sound card issue, so you may want to try updating your video card driver, and audio drivers and see if that makes a difference. If you can't find newer drivers, try using drivers older than what are currently installed.

    Paul,

For what it's worth I wrote this with the original Win8 to Win10 update...

If you have the time I suggest you run a 1709 update on your faulty Win10 using a UFD.

Thanks Brian, TBH I am not 100% sure I used WU, maybe this https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 but I guess your answer would be the same.

It's a sort of 'test' laptop, and I don't really use apps so I am not too fussed about it. I hope some patch may fix it, but if I have the time (and inclination) I will try your solution.

I have just had this issue again, which I had previously ascribed, perhaps falsely, to HMP.A, so it is intermittent in my case.

I have also seen the 'Task host' message above, so I am inclined to believe it is related.

Does a hard reset still solve the problem?

Paul, I wouldn't say anything solves it, or it wouldn't happen again.

What gets me out of the loop though is when Start menu isn't working I can sometimes right click the Windows logo on the Task Bar and Restart or Shut down from there, and that's when I'll see the message about the Plug and Play driver mentioned earlier. If I'm Restarting and see the message there is an option to Restart anyway. Clicking that, then when I'm back to the sign in screen, instead of signing in I Restart again. So far after the double Restart things seem to work OK again for a while.

    Pretty frustrating really.

It's just started happening for me as well. The Start Menu and Sidebar are only opening occasionally.

It started occurring after I connected a printer to my computer and launched Scannito Pro to scan a document. Maybe there's an issue caused by Scannito.

I've tried a few fixes with no luck as of yet. For now I am launching programs (other than my browser which is pinned to the task bar) by opening the exe file in the program's folder in Program Files from Command Prompt. I just tried Classic Shell and some other Start Menu replacements, but with all of them, there is a delay before the replacement Start Menu opens, which is a deal breaker for me.

Yesterday, on main computer, icons on taskbar wouldn't respond, nor would Start menu open. A reboot would clear it but on startup today, all taskbar icons except browsers (?) and Start were unresponsive, maybe launching about a minute after clicking them. SFC found nothing. This machine had issues during the update to FCU, why I don't know. Had to do a repair install of Windows but oddly, I had to complete the installation on the desktop, as it wouldn't proceed when you booted from the USB. Pretty aggravating.
