Quick look shows prepaid flip phone minutes seem to cost multiples of prepaid smart phone minutes.

I can only speculate that smartphone data leakage pays for the difference.

    Anyone know?

Yeah you can get massive data drain if you use a smartphone with its default settings and default browser.
Smartphones want to backup everything you do to the cloud, even changes you make to the settings, contact list, pictures you take etc, that sucks up large data.

So you turn all that sync stuff off.
Smartphones allow you to lock down data usage pretty well at the application level too so you can prevent unwanted internet usage.
Then get a privacy orientated browser that allows to load webpages without images (except when you need them) and without scripts and ads and third party domains. Do all that and 1 gig of data can last for weeks.
I've used several prepaid smartphones the best value was a tracfone because you can get a $30 minute data card that has 3 months of airtime with phone minutes and data, then you can buy extra 1gb data cards at $10 each as long as you still have airtime. Plus the airtime rolls over with new airtime cards.

Actually looking at tracphone on this. What simple privacy oriented browsers work well on lo-end smartphones?

And do you have a speculation about the 5X plan cost difference. Could my pitiful tracks on this one device actually be worth the cash? Some technical reason?

All of them work, even what you might call low end smartphones are pretty slick, the tracfone I had was, I think only $30 in Walmart, it wasnt the latest android but it ran any app I put on it without a problem.
I have seen the best value smartphones on tracfone.com at one time they were giving some of them away for free!!

They have 5x plans now? I have been meaning to get another tracfone, the one I used to have had a triple plan, it tripled the amount of minutes, texts etc.

My bad. I meant that flip phone minutes cost ~ 5 times as much as smartphone minutes, if I'm reading the site right.

I care more about privacy than anything, so can I do this without a flip phone?
