Paying for antivirus software is mostly BS

I can get bloaty McBloatface McAfee included in my ISP package, but I run Panda Free on Windows instead. It's just as good and much, much lighter. I've used the McAfee provided by my ISP in the past. I just don't see the advantage, even though technically I've paid for it.

 

Hmmm, the article makes a not-so-oblique reference to Microsoft/Windows Defender.

I have an "antivirus" on one machine running Windows 10 Professional, a best-kept and underrated secret. If one cuts thru the silly glossy interfaces and gets real with the gpedit (reminiscent of my EMET), there you go. For this and some additional Microsoft b*******, I paid in excess of $100 USD. It's called "Windows Defender."

 

Its comes down to personal opinions and choices.Some people feel safer with paid AV's or they just like to have the additional features.

But this article is BS.

 

I came to that conclusion in 2008 when I last used AV, then started using system visrtualization and.... I am a happy man.

Yes, but in my experience it's a terrible antivirus.

 

I pay judiciously for peace of mind and perhaps some safeguarding against the unknown. How I spend my cash for the upkeep of my property is essentially nunya beeswax and exempt from promoters of specific software products.

same here and I buy a couple and change around, running Kaspersky currently but have ESET and F Secure...you get what you pay for

Agreed, and its the same as buying anything else, there are products that are lemons, but on the same token there are honest and stellar products. The problem resides in the fact that most consumers are too lazy to do the leg work or Home work to ensure they are getting a quality product. There is and will always be shady software.
Our job as consumers is to navigate that market intelligently.

 

I will continue to use and pay for antivirus software. Period.
