HP and Lenovo...same spec's... same???

2 laptops with the exact same hardware spec's. An HP and a Lenovo. Is one better than the other simply because their logo is on it? What, if anything, makes one better than the other or is there no difference in reliability and durability?

 

What are the models of the laptops? The quality varies from model to model.

I own several HP (ProBook) and Lenovo (ThinkPad) business laptops, and can't fault the build quality. But, I really don't like their cheaper models.

 

Curious: what are the models and how long have you had them? You're saying the hardware is exactly the same? Screen size identical also? There are too many variables dictating reliability/durability once the machine gets into your possession and any component(s) could be less than perfect from the start. Performance is also contingent upon the software/firmware installed and the hardware configurations. Ever overheated or fell on the floor? Now battery life, that definitely varies by brand. You can visit the forums of Lenovo and HP and see what people have to say about your specific brands, that could be a treasure trove of info.

From personal experience, HP customer service is much better, Lenovo's stinks, quite honestly.

I had a HP laptop that cost $1200 in 2005. The build quality was awful while the build quality on a Dell laptop I bought two years later that was half the price was so far superior I cannot fault it.
The HP literally fell apart, the hinges stressed the case causing it to crack and split and eventually just disintegrate. No amount of glue and ductape could save it.
I bought another one on EBay for parts to fix it but the same thing happened to it. Both of them now reside in my box of junk computer parts.
The Dell on the other hand is still in perfect shape, the only thing I replaced is the screen, which was my fault I spilt coffee it shorted out the tube that lights the screen. I had the Dell over ten years I use linux on it.
I should also add, the HP customer service was the worst I have ever experienced in my entire life without a shadow of a doubt. I won't go into the entire story of that, the short version, their 48hr repair service. 3 months later and probably over 20 phone calls, I still had not received my laptop back even after they blatently lied to me multiple times that it was ready and would be shipped out the next day.
Do not buy an HP. Ever.

 

You mean you spent $120 on it in 2005, right? I'd consider a Compaq desktop, though.

Superfish was a bit before my time but that was a nasty, nasty trick that Lenovo still hasn't lived down, I think. I haven't had problems with crapware on these machines since the Anniversary update. Everybody reports something different, it's so subjective.

 

No it was $1200 or close to. I bought it in circuit city store. At the time it was a good spec laptop. The dell that outlasted two of them in succession is an inspiron that was about $650 and is still going strong

 

Both are 15.6" screens. The Lenovo is the AMD 6-7310 Radeon 4. Same as the HP. I don't own either one, but am comparing the two as a gift for a friend that mainly emails, surfs and does online shopping. The description of both units have the same specs on the Amazon website. Both claim to be 2017 models. I realize that both are budget laptops and have read many reviews how one is superior to the other. Yet I find it difficult to believe such claims when they both share the same machine guts.They both appear to be the same machine only one stamped HP and the other Lenovo with each having it's own company software.

 

I briefly owned a used HP laptop which would have had a retail cost similar to that. It felt cheap, compared to the business laptops I use. The cost was due to the i7 CPU and dedicated graphics, not due to the build quality. But, as I said previously, the quality varies greatly, from model to model, and the quality of my HP ProBooks is excellent.

I've never heard of HP and Lenovo laptops being the same. Can you post the model numbers of the two laptops, so I can take a look at both of them.

 

I was KIDDING. From what you described, even $120 sounds like an overcharge, lol.

I casually read about some Lenovo budget machines, not particularly positive, keeping in mind you're inclined to post more negative and problematic issues rather than positive experiences. Again, I would look thru the forums for posts on the relevant models.

As far as I know, there are no reports of any right now, but that is not really the point. First, Lenovo could easily insert such code in their products in tomorrow's production run. But more importantly, if someone knowingly keeps misbehaving over and over again, year after year - even after promising to stop - is there any reason to believe they suddenly have become trustworthy? Especially when it appears the only ones who could put a stop to it, the communist Chinese government who is also actively involved in cybercrimes and cyberwarfare against the Free World, condone and perhaps even encourage it?

I just had a look at both computers. They are not the same, but the design of both is very similar. The Lenovo is rated better in reviews than the HP one is.

For example, Laptop Mag, gave the HP a 1.5 star rating, with the verdict:

While the Lenovo appears to be a better laptop, considering the very low prices, while it should definitely be a better option than the HP one, it's not going to be very good. Basically, you get what you pay for. If you're just looking for a very cheap laptop, and don't care about long term reliability, then the Lenovo will be fine, and processor is not slow, so performance should be quite good. However, if you want something that is built to last, then a cheap refurbished business laptop would be a better option. I buy all my computers from eBay, and have not purchased a new computer for 11 years. While sometimes buying used electronics from eBay can be a bit of a gamble, there are online stores which sell low cost refurbished laptops with a warranty, so you can get it fixed if it has issues.

Will go with the Lenovo for my friend's gift. It should be ok for surfing, online shopping, and emails. Not a fancy laptop, but it's suited for what it will be used for. Thanks again for taking the time to help out.
