Yes I can certainly certify that IFW/IFL boot usb will work well for your setup. You can backup the whole disk, but when you restore it, you can select which partition(s) to restore, if you don't want to restore the whole disk. Very flexible. Only thing is you may need a bit of time to get yourself familiar with the GUI of IFW/IFL.
Thanks for the heads up.Ill download the trial over the weekend. Can it be installed on both linux and windows ? thanks
ellison64, You can install IFW in Windows and IFL in Linux. They create and restore the same images. If you decide to buy TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite I strongly recommend you spend an extra $10 and get the "Special Bundle". It includes BIBM which enables you to multi-boot multiple Linux and Windows OS. Your interest is more likely to be with Linux. Having a license for BIBM allows you to work with partitions in MBR and UEFI systems.
OK need some help and wanted to know what I am doing wrong. I have IFL on a USB and I cold image my laptop (Windows) all the time on a USB hard drive. Now I want to do this exact same (simple) process on my daughters Mac Air laptop (latest MacOS). I am ASSUMING I can use the same IFL USB and the same USB hard drive (note: hard drive its formatted in NTFS). When I attach the IFL USB, I hit Options during boot up to bring up the boot device menu. The USB is never in the list..it just sees the local hard drive. I am 100% a MacOS newbie...not sure if I am even doing that right? Can anyone walk me through this process? Will the current USB drive and USB hard drive work? Thanks!
How did you format the usb? Use the option - MBR FAT/FAT32 Partition or - MBR FAT/FAT32 Partition (Int13h Extensions) ps. if you dualboot OSX and Windows you should select the option "GPT Hidden From OS" when restoring the image. Panagiotis
@pandlouk Thanks for the reply. I actually just picked up Paragon for Mac. While I admit I don't use it too much on Windows I always like the product and figured this was a good solution.
When you make the IFL boot USB, format it with UEFI instead of MBR, because you can not boot a MBR formatted USB stick on a Mac. MBR is just not a Mac thing. Once your Mac boots from IFL USB stick, you can use your external USB HDD (NTFS formatted) as usual. Alternatively, try Clonezilla (alternative version based on Ubuntu). It can also backup MacOS.
If she has only MacOS Disk Utility is all she needs. When backing up from the recovery https://support.apple.com/el-gr/HT201314 (the partition can be unmounted) disk utility creates sector based backups. If run from the live system it creates file based ones. But cannot create incremental and differentials https://support.apple.com/kb/PH22247?locale=el_GR&viewlocale=en_US https://support.apple.com/kb/PH22250?locale=en_US&viewlocale=en_US ps. from standalone paid apps I prefer "SuperDuper!". Panagiotis
Damn, someone forgot to inform my macs ... Jokes appart, it will boot an mbr USB IFL in EFI mode. Panagiotis
Just format the UFD with FAT32, mount the ISO and copy the files to the UFD. The ISO contains boot files for both legacy and UEFI boot modes.
Well Ive purchased image for windows bundle as I want to use it to backup my windows and linux partitions.Ive just tried to create a boot disc and getting an error all the time.Anyone know what the problem may be?.Heres a screen shot of the error.
Make sure that mount folder is really empty, otherwise you will never be able to mount the image again. Also disable any real-time protection softs.
Ive done all that multiple times but still getting the same problem.I have to then reboot navigate to the specified folder and delete the contents(windows) of the mount folder to try again. Is there another way to create the boot disk ..a download somewhere?.Also why is the option to create the boot disk only when i start IFW in simple mode? thanks
Thanks for the link.To be honest its got to complicated,to mess with any longer.Ive successfully made the linux boot disk so i guess i can just use that.I think I should have purchased the IFL bundle rather than the IFW bundle,as I would have liked to install it to linux.I don't think i can do that with the windows bundle?.If it wasn't for updating my satnav ,i wouldn't be using windows at all ,and wouldn't have to bother dual booting.
When I restore my Linux system with IFL and check the hard disk with Gdisk, it says this: "The protective MBR's 0xEE partition is oversized! Auto-repairing." I have 2 partitions: EFI and XFS Appreciate your help
ellison64, Try this. Have IFW in Normal mode, not Simple. Copy the tbwinre folder to a data partition (put it in the root). So... C:\Program Files (x86)\TeraByte Drive Image Backup and Restore Suite\tbwinre to D:\tbwinre Open D:\tbwinre and double click TBWinPE.exe Continue on....
ellison64, Regarding the IFL you purchased. You can install this into Linux. Let's get the above done first. Your Bundle contains "everything".
Hi Brian thanks for the support. Im not sure whether you use linux so this post may need to go to unix section? To update though ,I decided to remove windows which was dual booting with linux mint from my desktop pc.I only need windows to update my satnav so ive installed windows7 on an old laptop ,which will be used just to update my satnav.I had a bit of a scare after deleting the windows partition as i couldn't boot linux then ,but a boot repair command in mint live disk has repaired that so now i can boot into my linux o/s .I now have unallocated space of about 240 gig which id like to share between my linux home partition and root partition. Is there a safe or recommended way to do this without risk of messing up the booting?.Im going to back up my current setup using the IFL boot disk ,before i attempt to share the unallocated disk space.
ellison64, If you want to get rid of that Unallocated Free Space you could use a BIBM boot disk to either... Make a new partition or Slide the Root partition up to the System Reserved partition and then resize the Root partition to take up the 241.56 GB of Unallocated Free Space. To install IFL into Mint... Download IFL v3.11 GUI Version from (you need this version for Linux) https://www.terabyteunlimited.com/product-download.php Don't unzip it in Windows unless you unzip a copy of the file. Open "readme.txt". The section "Setting up the IFL directory on a Linux distribution" describes how to install IFL into a Linux OS. Also... http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/howto/ifl_setup_linux.htm ... but this is for an earlier IFL version. These are worth reading... http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=566 http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/kb/article.php?id=586 You could install BIBM if you wanted to multi-boot other Linux distros but you would need to move Grub from the MBR to the partition boot sector. If you are using BIBM (installed) you can have a separate independent partition for IFL.
Thanks a lot Brian.. Especially for the link with the downloads.Ive added the free space to root with gparted,as i felt a bit more comfortable using that than BIBM (need to familiarize myself with it).Ive also installed image for linux. Thanks again
ellison64, In your IFL folder you should have "partwork". It is BIBM Work with Partitions. You can run it and play with the menus to learn about BIBM.
I encrypted the base image while setting the password. I also have bitlocker enabled in my system. I can create full image but I can't create incremental image. Does image encryption or bitlocker affect incremental image creation? Removed IFW for now and using O&O but haven't tried a restore yet.
