Thanks, awaiting their reply. Though I assume it is vulnerable, but perhaps ITW exploits won't work as they aren't compatible with Maxthon.

I don't know if there's a big difference between v5 and v4, but this is in the changelog:

Or perhaps with core they just meant Blink/WebKit.

They replied, and you can force an upgrade: http://forum.maxthon.com/index.php?/topic/21476-adobe-flash-and-maxthon/

I really don't know if Maxthon is affected by any flash vulnerabilities. In nearly seven years of using Maxthon I've never contracted malware using the browser.

Actually, I'm fairly convinced Mx is WebKit based. It's dual core (with Trident) anyway for Windows. I am also fairly positive it doesn't use Blink (maybe incorporates some of its code?). It just doesn't seem like a Chromium based browser to me.

To answer an old question, Maxthon used to be based on a modified Webkit called MxWebKit, but is now based on Chromium. They use the Chromium Embedded Framework and wrap a UI around it. Note that Maxthon comments less and less about web standards now because the actual web Dev part is relegated to chromium. This means that the core rendering and low level functions are untouched by Maxthon. Features like sandboxing are optional for applications using chromium embedded framework.

The whole idea of using CEF was to ensure quick updates to the blink core. But Maxthon doesn't seem bothered about that at all. I wouldn't use it, because it's essentially just a chrome clone now.

Any evidence for these claims? Because as far as I know it's still closer to WebKit than Chromium.

Hmmm, I'm still not totally convinced, but I'm guessing that it is actually Blink based. It acts far more like Safari than Chromium though so I don't know how much WebKit is still being employed, if any. Plus, in my experience, Maxthon moderators aren't always that knowledgeable. Mx5 doesn't seem totally like other Chrome/Blink based browsers though. I've used Mx for years but it's going through a slight buggy period at the moment. Nothing terrible, but they don't seem to catch a lot of minor bugs now. My default is Vivaldi now anyway, and that's definitely Chromium based lol.

Even when it was Webkit based, Maxthon had ditched JavaScriptCore and employed V8 which was lifted from the Chromium project. Later on, they decided to use the Blink Core from Chromium, and right now Jeff Chen has stated that he intends to achieve 100% extension compatibility with Chrome, something that is only achieved by implementing the exact same APIs Chrome does - making it even closer to Chromium.

The "Blink core" is actually just Chromium without the UI-elements anyhow....it isn't independently developed from Chromium.

OK thanks, I guess I should have paid more attention to the 'roadmap' lol. I'm a bit ambivalent about Chrome clones, I'm undecided whether they're a good thing or a bad thing.

It's good or bad based on who you ask - the problem with not keeping up with Chromium is that you fall behind on web standards support (vulnerabilities are often independently patched and as such are not that big a deal).

That's some interesting info. I already suspected it was based on Chromium. Maxthon will for sure become more popular if they are able to make it compatible with most Chrome extensions. But I wouldn't touch it, I lost my trust in them.

Try to download it with a different browser/download manager, ...
I was able to download it (48 MB / 57MB):
    Code:
    maxthon_portable_5.1.6.2000.7z 48.688.029
    mx5.1.6.2000.exe 57.142.560
