Is anyone having any problems with ABP on Firefox? I'm running Ubuntu 14.04. Several pages on some sites (IMDb inter alia) became very slow and unresponsive. This has stoped now I've changed to Adguard. I'm just curios.
I run palemoon and a few weeks ago tried various adblockers as some of the sites i visit seemed very slow and also as you mentioned unresponsive. Some adblockers were better than others. In the end though it was noscript that cured it rather than a specific adblocker.Going to the same sites on windows 7 with the same browser ,i don't get the problems so not sure if its a linux thing?Anyway not sure if this helps.
OK thanks. I think it's probably a Linux thing with Firefox. I'm surprised you had problems with Pale Moon, although I don't run that on Linux. I used uBlock Origin on Firefox until that had problems. I think it's more a Mozilla thing as they're fiddling about with Firefox. 90% of the time I'm in Ubuntu I use Chrome.
This is in Windows. I used NoScript along ABP for about 9 years. It worked great for a long time, never an issue with Firefox or Sandboxie. But about 4 months ago, I started getting slight freezes when I first opened the browser. After testing with a new Firefox profile, I detected the culprit was ABP. Later I found out there was a known bug in ABP and thats where my problem came from. After that, I uninstalled ABP and switched to UBO. That worked fine for about 2 months, but then UBO started getting messy, probably due to the changes that are coming to Firefox. So, I uninstalled UBO and installed ABP again believing that the bug was fixed. But found the bug is still there. So, I decided to quit using adblockers completely for now. After Firefox 57 comes out, I ll check them out again to see how they are working. NoScript is not an adblocker but it blocks most ads anyway, so that's good. I am seeing almost no ads. I might even get used to the few ads I am seeing and get away from using an adblocker even when they get fixed. Bo
Adguard seems to work well on Firefox with Windows and Linux. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/adguard-adblocker/?src=ss
Hi Daveski, I might test it and see how it goes. But the point of my post was to confirm that NoScript blocks most ad. This is so despite NoScript not being an ad blocker.. And thats pretty good because right now, the 2 adblockers that I feel very comfortable using have issues with Firefox. And besides that, I kind of like the idea of using one extension less. So, I am kind of getting used to not using the ad blocker. So far things are working fine without it. Bo
Hello Bo, I think if you can keep the ad's at bay with the skillful use of NoScript you're doing well. I stopped using NS a while ago so I really need an adblocker that works. I don't really use Firefox on Windows anymore and the only two reasons I ever use it on Ubuntu are: 1/ it was bundled with it and 2/SagePay won't recognise Blink based browsers. The way Firefox is going I'm tempted to download Pale Moon onto Linux as well.
The problem was that with a new update, UBO was not retaining updates to filters. The workaround was to go back to 1.13.8. And with the update before that one, I had found UBO switching the file where it saves data. I understand too many changes are/were going on in UBO due to coming Firefox 57, so I don't mind but I didn't want to deal with working around issues or going back to 1.13.8 until 57 gets here. At the time, I decided to uninstall UBO and use ABP again. But I found ABP still has the bug that made me switch to UBO about 5 months ago. So, I ended up uninstalling ABP and now I am just getting used to not using the adblocker and handling ads with NoScript. I ll try again the adblockers after Firefox 57 comes out. I ll probably try ABP first due to the many years I used the addon. If it dont work out, I ll install UBO and see how it works.. But I must say, I kind of like the idea of not using an adblocker. So, I might just not install one. Right now I am getting used to not using one. Bo
Yes, NoScript is blocking most ads. I might end up using 1 or perhaps 2 extensions at the most when Firefox 57 comes out. To me personally, trading seeing a few ads for better performance and one lesser extension is worth it. Palemoon. I dont think Palemoon, the version that uses extensions as we know them now, is the answer for anything. If you want to continue using something like Firefox, you must use either Firefox or a browser like Firefox that moves on to web extensions. In the case of PM, I know I read a few months ago that they will have a version that will use web extensions. And also keep the version that uses extensions as we know them now. Bo
I think Pale Moon may have a longer shelf life as some XUL extensions are coded specifically for it. For all I know, Fx 57 will be OK, I hardly use extensions on Firefox anyway. I've just updated Firefox on Windows. It seems to be working OK, the dropdown menus are showing properly again. I'll probably keep Adguard though. I remember when Firefox looked like this lol!
Why do you think that it's better than uB0? The latter has always worked for me flawlessly and is very fast. Above all, it's much more configurable (particularly via Dynamic Filtering). So I'm just curious where do you see the advantages of Adguard.
I don't know if it's necessarily better. Although it just seems to do the same job as uBlock Origin did. It's better for me on Firefox (Ubuntu & Windows) because it works with no problems. Unlike ABP and uBO.
I hope it does, Daveski. I am confident Firefox 57 will be very nice. I tried Nightly a few days ago (Firefox Fifty eight), it felt pretty good. I like what I see. The UI looks as I like it. I wont feel the need to change much to feel comfortable as I have to do now with current Firefox. For my personal taste, the changes Mozilla is doing in the UI and how the browser looks and functions are very nice. After removing buttons from the UI that I dont use, Firefox 57 is gonna look fairly similar to how my Firefox looks and functions now. I ll have no need for CTR. There ll be a few things I like doing with CTR that wont be able to do in 57 without the extension but I ll get used to it. I tested Adguard. Works good. The one thing I didnt like though, is that it pushes using the English filter. I tried testing Adguard with Easy Filter and Easy Privacy only, and Adguard automatically turned the English filter back on when I disabled it. It did it a few times. But it works similarly to ABP and UBO. Uses more resources. You can still make it look like old Firefox, take a look. Bo
Firefox: Adblock Plus lost millions of users in the past year https://www.ghacks.net/2017/09/29/firefox-adblock-plus-lost-millions-of-users-in-the-past-year/
I first noticed it in IMDb, but the slow down/freezing happened in quite a few sites that have adverts, especially online newspapers and journals. This was with ABP, the problems with uBO were different and that was the same Firefox compatibility problem (disappearing icon etc) that virtually everyone else had. Once I changed to Adguard on Windows Fx was fine. The same slow down/freezing (I checked IMDb first) happened on Ubuntu though after I changed to ABP from uBlock. Again, Adguard works well. I'll give it a spin for a while in Firefox on Windows and Linux.
I just think less people are using Firefox. ABP is inbuilt in Maxthon (my default browser on Windows) which, according to Maxthon, is 670 000 000 user's default browser.
Personally, I wish Shuttleworth would bundle a different browser with Ubuntu, but I suppose Firefox made logical sense at the time; Mozilla still had some credibility and people actually trusted them. I'd have thought SeaMonkey could have been a good alternative, the Sea Monkey Council maintain SM without feeling the need to compete with Chrome. Pale Moon could have also worked. Vivaldi would be my choice now as a bundled browser with Ubuntu, I think it is slowly making progress as a browser, although its reliance on Chrome extensions may not be an advantage. It runs well in Ubuntu and I believe Tetzchner is on the right track with it. Although Vivaldi (and all Blink based browsers) still aren't compatible with Sage Pay so I'd still require a non-Blink browser on Ubuntu lol. I like your 'old Firefox' (CTR right?), but I miss the complete theme customisation that the genuine old Firefox had, and Pale Moon is still capable of.
OK, scrub everything I said lol. I've been having some other problems with IMDb in Maxthon (Windows) and discovered Firefox (Ubuntu) also suffered the same problem, although other browsers didn't. After a while I realised it was the adblockers (Adguard & ABP), so I've reinstalled uBO on Fx in Ubuntu and Windows and all is fine again! Hurrah!
