I normally run the installed sumo_lite, but want to switch to using the portable version, but want to retain my settings.

I see the settings, ignore list and so on are in appdata.

If I uninstall SUMo via Control Panel, will the appdata folder be retained, or must I copy that folder to the portable folder first?

If you are always working with administrator rights, better make a backup of the folder "KC Softwares\SUMo" before uninstalling it.

    After uninstalling of SUMo:
    Code:
c:\users\user\AppData\Roaming\KC Softwares\SUMo\ directory will be retained
    c:\users\administrator\AppData\Roaming\KC Softwares\SUMo\ = directory will be removed

    Thanks @mood. Saved my bacon.

I do run as admin. Backed up that folder, uninstalled, and copied the folder back to the same location and all seems fine.
It seems the portable version also expects the folder there, rather than in the portable folder itself?

Hope the portable version remembers my license after an update.

Yeah, it expects the configuration in the AppData-directory.
I'm not sure where the registration info is stored. If the info is nowhere in the configuration-folder it can be that it is stored in the registry :doubt:
    "HKCU\Software\KC Softwares\SUMo"
Both "versions" (installer + portable version) are using the same configuration (AppData\...) so the registration info should be retained after an update.
After installation of the new version:
    SUMo_update.png
    :cautious:
But 5.3.369 is installed (file properties):
    SUMo_executable.png
Edit: It is detecting the portable version of SUMo, which i have extracted to my portable directory and i forgot to delete it

Yes I updated the portable to 5.3.6 this morning and can confirm the license info was retained, still registered.

I'm on a bit of a drive to switch to portable versions, where the option exists. Always have been really.

Using portable version. Isn't the spirit of a portable app to write files to its current location only?

Why SUMo keeps writing to C:\Users\MrX\AppData\Roaming\KC Softwares\SUMo

Wondered the same thing, #2330. It's OK with me, but I agree it would be better to write files to the portable folder when using that version.

Tbh, any other path than its current portable folder, it's unacceptable for me.

See this scenario: I got 30 apps (20 portable, 10 non) monitored by SUMo. If I have to restore a system backup or reinstall Windows, all apps contained in db.sumo should be in the portable folder to avoid re-adding them once again.

Yes, the configuration should be saved to a subfolder of the portable version.

    (suggestion to the developer):
Maybe it can be done like this:
Requirement 1) a file named: "portable.dat" is added to sumo.zip
Requirement 2) an additional check is added to the SUMo-executable (it checks for the presence of a file "portable.dat"

Now, after the user has extraced the file sumo.zip and has started SUMo (for example: "..\portable\SUMo.exe")

    a) the file "..\portable\portable.dat" is being detected and SUMo.exe is looking for the configuration in a subfolder of the current directory
a1) if there is no configuration, a default configuration is being created (in a subfolder of the current directory)
a2) if there is already a configuration in a subfolder, SUMo.exe is reading this configuration
= now it is a "real" portable version. The user can copy the whole directory to other locations and settings are preserved.

    b) the user starts the installed version of SUMo.exe "c:\Program Files (x86)\KC Softwares\SUMo\SUMo.exe"
    b1) SUMo.exe can't find a "portable.dat" and is reading the configuration from the usual location: "...\AppData\Roaming\KC Softwares\SUMo\"

Are you suggesting this for Kyle, to write new code? Or this is actually the way SUMo can be configured to be fully portable?

Also can be done like this, thing I'd not like to use:
SUMo portable version made by PAFers from other forums.

I think @mood is suggesting changing SUMo portable code to work this way (maybe I'm wrong, but Requirement 2 would seem to indicate this), and we would all agree it is not fully portable otherwise.

@Kyle_Katarn please would you consider this?

Yes, this is what I plan to consider fora future version.
It's a long time request by many users and i've been very lazy on this but i will definitively have to improve on this.

Yes, it was a suggestion. But it seems we can expect a "real" portable version in the near future:
