I'm really liking this AV. It fits my criteria of what an AV should be... an AV and nothing else. It has resident file scanning and a web guard as well (which I disable cuz it slows my browser down)... and that's it. I found v3 a bit more bloated so I allow definition updating only. Lightest AV since those old Avira Free versions in the good ol' days before AV's became too bloated with modules other stand alone apps are better at.
AND, it's not a full fledged AV, it's an Anti-Malware. Even on their forums they recommend using an AV alongside MBAM as it cannot catch all threats.
I'm currently using MBAM 3 Premium and Windows Defender, and I do like this combo. MBAM is great but, as has already been mentioned above, I would always complement it with an AV/Security Suite.
Not really: If you would prefer to use only one security product, choose Malwarebytes 3.0 Premium. Based on our testing, Malwarebytes 3.0 alone provides excellent protection against today’s threat landscape. BUT: MBAM 3 can (should?) be run alongside an AV/Security Suite of your choice: If you would prefer to pay for only one security product, choose Malwarebytes 3.0 Premium and add a free traditional antivirus like Windows Defender (pre-installed for free in Windows 8 and 10). Malwarebytes installs alongside Windows Defender by default, so this is the default configuration in Windows 8 and 10. If you would prefer to pay for two security products, by all means feel free to do so. Malwarebytes is compatible with all major security products on the market. Thanks for the link / info Anon.... This surprises me though they are stating that it IS enough on its own in their FAQ: https://support.malwarebytes.com/docs/DOC-1147
They need to change that because they clearly state in there forums to run a good AV along side MBAM. MBAM is not designed to catch all threats out there that a AV will.
"Sole" protection?... don't make me laugh. I usually don't even use real-time AV's on my machines at all. Sandboxie, isolated partitions (also sandboxed) for any new files scanned manually before moving them elsewhere, whitelisting, permissions, classic HIPS and outbound filtering are sufficient. Even that's not the core of my approach though, eliminating/disabling/tweaking the OS in the first place to harden it and eliminate attack surface and vulnerabilities is to pretty much even render all that stuff moot. I only use it on my Win7 machine because I don't trust any Windows OS since XP the way that I trust XP. You can't lock it down as well. I only use MBAM because I don't even notice it's there in terms of footprint, and already use it as an on demand scanner anyhow. The end result will be the same anyhow. I haven't seen malware, viruses, or whatever classification you wish to call it since before there was a SP2 for XP, and McAfee & Norton were pretty much the only 2 options. If you rely on a resident AV as your sole protection in the first place your security approach is whack, IMO. It should be your last consideration, if one at all.
I follow their forum and it is NOT a one stop solution. You also need an antivirus as they both look at files differently. I am surprised they didn't take that crap down since it has been quite some time since it was posted. BS over real life ? Another vendor I use is Emsisoft Internet Security. They are dropping their Internet Security and doing their Anti Malware relying on Windows firewall. I am beginning to believe vendors are changing their products because of customer lack of knowledge. Dumbing down for the masses.
This thread is talking about Malwarebytes version 2. Your link is directed to version 3. Info is from version 3 FAQ.
This has always been a bit confusing. The company marketing has implied v3 can be used as sole protection, but all the people on the forum have said no way.
Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is not an anti-virus program. The following quote is a statement from the Malwarebytes Team. (Malwarebytes 2.0) Malwarebytes 3.0 Malwarebytes for Windows ("Malwarebytes") is an "AV replacement." It is not an AV. Ability to run as primary protection (no AV) or secondary protection (alongside existing AV) We have always believed that no one product can do it all, and the free AV that comes with modern operating systems, in conjunction with Malwarebytes is all you will ever need. // Most likely talking about Windows Defender as the free AV. https://www.malwarebytes.com/support/guides/mbam/
