I love DS for that reason. Light and portable...and most importantly...works!

    HI Arvy

I hear you. In fact I am setting up a new machine for a friend. One of the installs is Macrium, eh v6. All 4 of my machines are on v6

Indeed. [I apparently had Typomatic toggled on.]

Let's face it, software companies that adopt a business model that requires continual adding of features to create a revenue stream will inevitably produce bloatware. [That model also results in planned obsolescence of trimmer versions.] It seems to me that a subscription model makes much more sense. It takes away the incentive to add bric-a-brac and allows the provider to pour development effort into actually polishing the product. I'd gladly pony up year after year for software that focuses on quality rather than glitz, so long as the subscription fee was reasonable.

@layman -- Yup. In some cases, such as Nero's annual "new spit and polish" offerings, they even include "pre-order" enticements so you can pay them first and get the so-called "upgrade" later. As you suggest, the "as a service" subscription trend may very well be the ultimate offshoot of the original concept of a "license to use" software and all of its EULA provisions that no one every really reads in complete detail. Personally, I've been looking very hard at Linux alternatives.
