Yes but it's using the Win Firewall itself, no? So theoretically, if the Win Firewall is somehow shutdown, you have got no protection against inbound and outbound access. But I suppose the BB will try to protect the Win Firewall from being tampered with.

 

We are not. We do not build a new frontend for the existing the Windows Firewall. We are adding a feature that prevents other applications from from changing your firewall configuration and rules. We do not plan to replicate Windows dialogs or anything like that.

That has been the case since the very first version of EAM and doesn't change now either. EAM always has been blocking suspicious outgoing connections as well as attempts to open ports locally in a suspicious manner.

 

WFC does the exact same thing, and it's a pretty good tool, so it's not a bad idea. I just think that a behavior blocker should have the ability to block outbound/inbound connection on its own.

Yes, but now it will use the Win Firewall for this. For example, if I disable the Win Firewall, a tool like SpyShelter can still block outgoing connections. But a tool like GlassWire can not. What about EAM?

 

Never has been, never will be. The way connections are intercepted in the behaviour blocker in EAM has never used the Windows Firewall nor our own firewall for that matter and was always based on a completely different mechanism. So Windows Firewall on or off doesn't matter for us.

I just wonder if EAM will allow exclusions for apps (like WFC) to add/Modify Firewall Rules. I really hope so, hate to see WFC go.

 

Yes. You can define which applications are allowed to touch your firewall settings and which aren't.

Same release cycle as always. Beta starts in the last 1 - 2 weeks of the month, release at the beginning of the next month.

EAM + TFW ?, - vs. WFC ?, - vs. WFN ?, - vs. ZA ?, - vs. CF ? - vs. , etc. + learning curves.

EMIS > EAM = The Inconvenient Truth

 

Well, obviously EIS > EAM. I mean, otherwise, we would have sold people thin air all the years. The question is whether that added benefit is useful for the majority of our users and it isn't. There is by the way one case where EAM is actually superior to EIS. The firewall gets in the way of the behaviour analysis sometimes. So EAM's behaviour blocker may detect stuff, that EIS doesn't detect because the firewall and the blocked network traffic got in the way of the behaviour analysis.

 

Those who would be willing to give up a little security for convenience deserve neither. Or something like that?

The fact remains that while hawki currently has no intention of abandoning Emsisoft's most excellent protection, he is not happy having to spend his time comparing, learning, and implementing his FW and FW-assist options respecting outgoing connections atm. hawki is fairly certain he is not alone in this.

 

hawki likes the current feature in EMIS that alerts and allows him to block outgoing connections by "Unknown" programs. That's the gap.

 

Hawki needs to stop referring to himself in each post lol.
