Can we get back on track now please and discuss Macrium. Any further discussion about hardware should be started in that area of the forum ... thanks.
Sorry...it was my fault. I guess I can say it was a fill in as we wait for the next update. Anyway, this actually did make sense (to me) as we do wait for the new malware update to MR7 as I wanted to know about the best method of protection...which seems to be a separate HDD that is NOT an internal drive.
OK...back on topic... So, if I do create an Image and then DIFF backups to my NEW external drive ( ) and create an XML so my wife can just click it, is there a way it can have her add a description and/or file name? ie: can it be told to pause for the info?
@MPSAN - you can create a definition for her backup, then SELECT that backup (in the DEF list), <right-click> your selected DEF and select "Create a DeskTop Shortcut." When the window pops up, select Backup Type = PROMPT and Target = <name of your Desktop shortcut>. This will create a shortcut that when <double-click>ed will open allowing her to select the type of backup and to add a comment at that point. When you pop out of the comment area, hit FINISH... that's it.
Froggie, no matter what I do, it keeps saying FULL under backup type. I changed it to PROMPT but when I look at itt again it still says FULL. It does seem to work, however, but then I need to do a ctrl-alt-m to see progress.
@MPSAN - if you've created the shortcut correctly (selected the right DEF for reference and PROMPT on the DropDown, when you <double-click> the created ShortCut you'll get the window below. At that point you click the RADIO button for whatever image type you'd like to do, then <click> on the "Set backup comment" button and write your comment. When you return from the comment, <click> finish. If you don't get that widow dialogue, you haven't done the shortcut correctly (by not selecting the PROMPT DropDown when creating the ShortCut.
If you changed it to PROMPT, gave it a target name and did a SAVE, the shortcut should be on your desktop and when you <double-click> it'll look like the window above. the <ctrl-alt-M> anomaly is what V7 gave you for seeing that window. Under v6, it's available in the System tray.
Yes, that IS what I get, but was surprised that the PROMPT type did not show if I look, but it does work. I sure wish we could set the backup to SHOW progress and not need ^AltM as it is a pain. See my wife wants EVERYTHING automatic!!
Well, when she finds out how well & RELIABLE it runs, she'll eventually forget about seeing the operation window. I never look at it anymore... it just runs.
Yes, but the thing is that she wants to run it just before powering off for the day and that window will show her when it is done.
Hello @MPSAN, When you create your definition file, under "Advanced Options", there is an option for "Shutdown". If you have already created your definition file, just "Edit" it to add the "Advanced Option" for "Shutdown".
Thank you both. I will tell her that. When I saw Puff on here I thought the new feature was being released!
@MPSAN - just be careful if she's using the same Definition for some sort of managed GFS backup scheme. If so, when that change is made, it will also shut down her System everytime the GFS schedule is run. If she's doing that, just create a 2nd DEF (with no automatic scheduling) that's identical to the first but has the SHUTDOWN option set, then create that DeskTop SHORTCUT off of that 2nd definition.
If that's the case, then @Peter2150 and @puff-m-d have the answer. If she edits the DEF to include the SHUTDOWN, she can then use the shortcut and the System will shut down when it's through, automatically.
Just had my first experience with booting to my USB stick. it was corrupted so I had to install PE all over again to get things working.
Basically the Reflect "wizard" just installs the same WinPE boot.wim image on your rescue media as it creates on your hard drive for optional inclusion in your regular system boot menu. In what way did it corrupt the USB stick? Was it completely unbootable or did it boot okay but with some operational problem?
Hi Boredog Besure there is nothing blocking writing the mbr. I know I have to turn of HMPA mbr protection or I can't write a boot disk
Are you taking about the MBR in the UFD? Why should the create-boot UFD process write to the disk MBR? I always create the boot UFD with Shadow Defender enabled (which protects the MBR). Never have had a problem with MBR (or GPT) disks. The same with other imaging programs.
